Job Description

We are currently looking to recruit an innovative, enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership and professional development for the nursing team within the clinical area and will also be required to provide support to the Catheter Lab Manager and deputise in their absence. We are looking for someone with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team. You will provide expert advice and support to the whole multidisciplinary team in caring for patients. You will be expected to maintain high standards of care and be accountable for auditing those standards. The post holder will develop, implement and evaluate policies, guidelines and protocols for the management of patients attending the clinical area in conjunction with the Cath Lab manager and specialist MDT teams. ABOUT THE TEAM The Catheter Lab and Day Unit is purpose built and designed to house four fully equipped Cardiac Catheter Labs, a Hybrid Lab, a six- bay reception / recovery area for Adults, Paediatrics & General Anaesthetic patients and a 9 bedded Cardio-Vascular Day Case Unit, which accommodates up to 20 patients a day. The Cardiac Catheter labs and Day Unit run from Monday to Friday, from 07:15 - 20:15hrs with the catheter labs being open from 0800 to 1800hrs. All other hours in the week (including week-ends) are covered by an on-call service for emergencies. The area is staffed to facilitate the 24hr 'Primary On-Call Service'. This is an extremely exciting time to work within the unit, as we are just about to embark on a day unit refurbishment project, with a view to increasing bed capacity. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Develop and maintain a ward/department philosophy that has the patient at the centre of care delivery. * Be the primary focus within the department environment. * Provide professional nursing leadership at ward level and work with the Catheter Lab Manager and Matron to enhance nursing practice and strategy. * To work in partnership with the Lead Clinician and ensure accountability for the delivery of the quality performance agenda. * Manage the department and be responsible for ensuring catheter lab and day unit cover including 24-hour on call cover for the services provided, and skill mix required. * Be a role model for all and contribute effectively to inter-professional team working. * Incorporate the Matron's ten Key responsibilities in the role as laid out in 'Modern Matron' - Improving the patient experience. (DoH 2003). * Evaluate the relevance of changes in clinical practice and then support and facilitate implementation in the clinical area. * Develop a quality learning environment linking education and training with the delivery of high standards of patient care and retention and recruitment of staff. * Undertake nursing bleep holding responsibilities within designated area. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in leadership, mentoring, teaching and developing junior staff and students. Experience in nursing patients undergoing Adult Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology procedures is essential; Congenital Intervention and Electrophysiology desirable.
