Country: United Kingdom Location: Southampton Function: Scientific Research & Development Level: Experienced Professional Appointment Type: Permanent Job purpose To apply knowledge of Product Compliance processes, chemicals and materials including purposes & functions and chemicals legislation to manage the compliance workload, driving process improvement activities in the Product Compliance team and embedding best practices into business as usual. Context * The drivers of growth, value and competitive advantage in the tobacco industry are changing due to increased regulation. The major challenge for BAT will be the ability to offer a portfolio of differentiated product experiences through innovations that enable BAT to compete successfully under any future market scenario. The Product Compliance Team specifically addresses this issue by providing product regulatory impact assessments, regulatory interpretations and validations, as part of the technical compliance evaluation package which is relied upon by BAT for successful innovations. * This role will have responsibility for the chemical and substance compliance content of the product portfolio which is relied upon by BAT compliance and product/project delivery teams. Key Accountabilities Operational/Professional/Business Responsible for the management and delivery of assessments through the application of appropriate means learned from knowledge and experience and thorough understanding of materials and consumables, ensuring that the assessments conducted meet BAT Product Guidance, BAT Duty of Care standards and legal requirements. Implements the principles of 'Best Practice' and ensures Technical teams are adhering to assessment processes. Provide technical support to the Product Compliance team, in providing subject matter expertise to the Product Centers, Consumer Product Safety and PRRP teams on all chemical related matters. Trains individuals on assessments processes, SOPs and WIDs. Ensures the confidentiality of all supplier information is maintained to ensure their trust, support and co-operation. Work effectively in a highly dynamic and challenging working environment, balancing competing priorities and providing leadership in a key area of the business. Management Planning - medium-long term workload. Reporting - compiles metrics on workload, delivery and effectiveness for senior management in Product Compliance. Budget - inform forecast and adhere to financial process and controls. Leadership Leads the design and implementation of improved processes in the Product Compliance team. Provides coaching and problem-solving support to individuals, performing assessment activities and checks their work where necessary. Relationship Build trust into the relationship with suppliers to obtain disclosures and manage issues. To develop and maintain effective working cross-functional relationships with stakeholders such as LEX, R&D IT, Regional Product Compliance & Central Product Team. To build strong relationships with Consumer Product Safety permanently driving for continuous improvement. Engage with IT teams and other internal stakeholders to map Product Compliance processes and test IT solutions. Maintains a network of contacts in LEX, Product and R&D, and in the regulatory groups of other tobacco companies, to enable the stewardship of BAT products and third-party manufacturing Innovation Identify new opportunities for process improvement and improved communication with stakeholders to drive efficiency, delivery and visibility of work. Write, review and update training materials, guidance documents, SOPs and work instructions on assessments processes. Creative thinking to support Product Compliance processes. Knowledge, skills and experience A good first degree in a relevant technical discipline and/or area of expertise developed through experience and positive track record. Working knowledge of regulatory formats, technical files and design dossiers would be an advantage. Excellent written and verbal reasoning skills. Possess computer competency in Microsoft office software, data collection and general analysis tools; Microsoft Excel proficiency particularly preferred. Maintains awareness of the current & emerging tobacco regulatory environment Ability to manage upwards effectively and assertively, as well as within the peer group, to acquire the necessary information, and help drive and inform the decision-making process by the appropriately placed people (both at the senior and junior level). Ability to work independently, but also able to engage and influence within a more complex matrix structure where no reporting lines exist. Able to deal proactively and confidently when faced with a high level of ambiguity and tight time constraints. Strong team player who collaborates with peers to support critical projects and deliverables. Positive "can-do" attitude and effective problem solver. Key Success Factors Chemical compliance activities are direct
