Online applications are invited to apply for a senior fellow post in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care commencing 1st September 2020 or potentially sooner. This post is fixed term. This post is based in the Wessex Cardiac Centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The unit is the third busiest UK cardiac centre with some of the lowest mortality rates. The ITU has 16 beds and there are 22 all day cardiac theatre lists per week. ABOUT THE TEAM This post combines clinical duties with an excellent teaching programme and research opportunities. The clinical component provides training in adult (and potentially paediatric) cardiac anaesthesia and adult cardiac intensive care, and includes on-call cover for the adult cardiac intensive care unit. Southampton is one of a few European centres (and only UK centre) accredited to run the EACTA fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care programme. Southampton has one of the longest running and most successful programmes. There is formal consultant-led weekly teaching in cardiac anaesthesia, ITU and transoesophageal echocardiography. Extensive support and training is given to those undertaking TOE accreditation. There are opportunities for suitable fellows to undertake this. WHAT YOU'LL DO The post offers wide exposure to all types of acquired adult and congenital cardiac disease with the exception of cardiac transplantation.There is close involvement with the diagnosis of and surgical or other interventional management of cardiac disease.There are considerable opportunities for perioperative anaesthetic and intensive care management, including the use of perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography, pulmonary artery catheterisation, nitric oxide, aortic balloon counter pulsation, haemofiltration and the insertion of percutaneous tracheostomies. There will be some opportunity to gain some experience in ECMO and other mechanical circulatory assistance but we are not a cardiac transplant or ECMO centre. This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and does not carry a National Training Number. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Applicants must be GMC registered by the time they start the position. This includes demonstrating clarity and breadth in use of verbal and written communications in relation to our patient group as determined by GMC regulations (by IELTS or OET tests). Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach confirmation to your application. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
