Job Description
Summary Summary of Department: Aegon UK are looking for a Chief Architect that plays a vital role in the continued success and growth of our UK business. The role of the Chief Architect at Aegon UK will report directly into the Chief Technology Officer and is principally covering the following areas. Summary of Role: Business Strategy Alignment: Ensure that there is a clearly aligned and funded Technology Strategy and roadmap for the next 3 years across the whole of Aegon UK. This must be aligned to wider Global initiatives across other Aegon business' Developer productivity: Ensure that the developers (including Vendors) across the organisation are productive and efficient for the business. This means taking ownership of all engineering processes with close integration to CISO and other governance functions. Design Governance: Responsible for all elements of the AUK architecture and key design decisions. Ensuring that architectures for Data, Cloud, Integrations, SaaS, Packaged and DIY technologies are modelled and well documented. Leadership: Provide thought leadership and advisory across AUK from board level down to development teams. Create an open and collaborative technology working culture in AUK aligned to Aegon Global and broader technology communities. Introduce agility into the tech delivery culture and migrate the organisation to a DevSecOps culture driving automation of the IT processes. Global Alignment and Innovation: Work closely with Aegon's global architecture community. This involves ensuring alignment to Global Strategies to drive efficiency and re-use as well as leading on Global initiatives and contributing back to the community. Work closely with the business strategy team, vendors and internal technology teams to facilitate innovation to solve business problems. This job is impacted by the senior manager and certification regime as below: Legal Entity SMCR Status Effective From SE Certified December 2018 SIIL December 2018 Cofunds Certified 9th December 2019 AISL Certified 9th December 2019 AIL Certified 9th December 2019Job Description Key Tasks: * Develop overall reference architectures, as well as critical investment planning in strategic cloud platform technologies and services * Develop and maintain an aspirational architectural road map for the enterprise, maintaining current and planned architectural blueprints * Socialise these roadmaps and technology investments with senior business leaders to ensure buy in and organisational commitment for enterprise-level architecture and infrastructure initiatives * Work closely with a variety of product and business owners to help understand and clarify business requirements * Design and oversee implementation of end-to-end integrated systems, key sign off for "big ticket" initiatives * Communicating architectural decisions, plans, goals and strategies, highlighting short-term trade-offs vs long-term commitments * Ensuring that the systems under construction are scalable (technology), efficient (process), effective (cost), and supportable * Develop architectural metrics and reports * Ensure that the technology architecture and technical strategies remain current and in line with company business goals and wider market technology developments * Thoroughly understanding company direction, goals, and the competitive environment, and determine how architecture choices can add value to the organisation * Making expert recommendations and decisions clearly linked to the organisation's strategic and financial goals * Promoting best practices to support scalability, skills transfer, and organisational change * Providing thought leadership and advice to architects, technical leads, and software engineers * Maintaining in-depth knowledge of the organisation's technologies and architecture. * Oversee and coordinate the efforts of other technology-specific architects, including the security architect, the data architect, the cloud architect and the solution architects supporting the business systems. * Attend meetings with current and potential vendors, a key leader in the selection of new vendor products and services. * Keep abreast of new technologies that might be beneficial to the organisation * Run the Innovation Lab * Meet with vendors * Do proof-of-concepts, often involving coding a member of the architecture team * Attend industry conferences in order to be able to see what new technologies are hot, and to even see what our competitors are doing. * Occasionally give talks or sit on panels at conferences * Own the software engineering processes and drive automation across all product and project development teams (Vendor and Aegon) to ensure continuous/iterative development integration and deployment are the norm * Leading and encouraging a positive software development culture where teams collaborate and co-create with each other and their customers to produce the best products * Unblock organisational impediments to smooth software developme
