Online applicants are invited to apply for the post as an Consultant in Intensive care and Anaesthetics. University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is a highly progressive Trust which the tertiary referral and teaching centre for a large area of the south of England and the Channel Islands. ABOUT THE TEAM The Department of Critical Care, Theatres and Anaesthetics is a large department within the Trust, and covers a very wide range of work. We are concerned for the well being of our Consultants and attention is paid to work life balance in the detailed construction of job plans. We are passionate about patient care and believe that is best achieved by well supported staff. In the aftermath of SARS-Covid 19 there is an unknown need for GICU provision. Thus the successful candidate will require resilience and flexibility at first. However they will be joining a cohesive team who all are working together to deliver high quality care for patients in these difficult and uncertain times. WHAT YOU'LL DO The Trust has over 1100 beds for inpatient services, along with over 40 operating theatres and four intensive care units. It has extensive research facilities including the Welcome Clinical Research and a Biomedical Research Unit. It currently employs 127 Consultant Anaesthetist or Intensivist staff. It provides every type of tertiary centre care, with the exception of organ transplantation. It is the Major Trauma Centre for the region. UHS is the largest centre for Intensive Care on the South Coast and has a regional responsibility for delivery of specialist care, education and research. The Unit received a rating of Outstanding in the CQC inspections in 2016 and continues to deliver very high quality ICNARC data. The General ICU currently has 28 beds and provides for medical and surgical level 3 patients divided between 2 adjacent areas. In addition there is a 10 bed peri-operative level 2 unit currently looked after by the GICU Consultant team. A large ICU extension will open in the autumn of 2020 which will allow the expansion of GICU to 31 beds, but more importantly will greatly enhance the quality of the physical space devoted to General ICU. This is therefore an exceptionally exciting time for the Unit as it moves into new accommodation. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Applicants should have CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register.
