ABOUT THE TEAM University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is the 8th largest hospital Trust in the country and a major national centre for teaching and research, employing approximately 10,000 staff. Functioning as both a District General Hospital and a Regional/Supra-Regional specialist hospital, it provides over 50 clinical services providing integrated patient care. The Cancer Care Group is part of Division A and is formed by the Departments of Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care. The Southampton Oncology Centre provides comprehensive cancer services to a population of approximately 1.7 million and provides a high degree of specialisation with multidisciplinary clinics for all the major cancers. WHAT YOU'LL DO Clinical Haematology incorporates Haemostasis & Thrombosis services, Haemoglobinopathy, General Haematology, Haemato-oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. The Haematology service is subspecialty based and provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service both to the local population in Southampton and South West Hampshire as well as tertiary referrals for specialist opinions for complex haematological cases and patients transferred to Southampton for other regional services such as neurosurgery or cardiac services. Southampton is a Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre serving patients from Hampshire, the Channel Islands and further afield. The centre provides comprehensive adult and paediatric services from initial laboratory and clinical diagnostic services to monitoring and treatment. Southampton is a designated ITP Clinical Centre. There is a rapidly expanding portfolio of haematology clinical trials in Southampton including both NIHR portfolio studies and both early and late phase commercial studies and investigator led studies. Southampton is at the forefront of gene therapy studies in haemophilia. Clinical research in haematology is supported by a team of 5 clinical trials practitioners and 4 clinical trials administrators and a haemostasis research fellow. This post is to join the haemostasis and thrombosis team to provide locum cover for up to 12 months with responsibility for both the general haematology consultative and outpatient services, support for transfusion services and the specialist Haemostasis and Thrombosis service at UHS. It is predominantly outpatient based with limited inpatient responsibilities. The consultants work closely with the paediatric haematology consultants especially in haemophilia and related bleeding disorders. The post would be ideally suited to a candidate who has recently obtained CCT in haematology and keen to gain further specialist experience in haemostasis and thrombosis, exposure to clinical trials and to managing patients in a tertiary centre. The successful applicant will be encouraged to further develop subspecialty expertise and the service as a whole including managerial responsibilities, dependent on the experience of the post holder. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Applicants should have FRCPath Part 2 and either have or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT in Haematology or be on the GMC Specialist Register. Consideration will also be given to applicants with Consultant level experience working towards GMC specialist registration. Tertiary level experience in haemostasis and thrombosis is very desirable. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, to a professional standard, in spoken and written English.
