Job Description

Deputy Editor GlobalCapital, the capital markets newspaper, is looking to hire a Deputy Editor. The successful applicant will be mostly desk-based editing daily news, analysis and opinion alongside the Editor. The main focus of the job is to see that GlobalCapital's output is published to the highest standards to deadline both daily online and weekly in print. There will be scope for the Deputy Editor to get out and about among the capital markets and to produce their own copy, but the priority is editing, the smooth running of the newsroom and encouraging journalists across the newspaper's global operation to produce capital markets stories of the highest quality in the face of ferocious competition. The Deputy Editor will be expected to be able to run the newsroom when the Editor is away, including overseeing the production of the weekly print edition on Thursday nights. Key responsibilities Editing raw copy, turning it into stories or op-eds that leap off the page and grab readers' attention. Applying the style guide and flawless spelling, punctuation and grammar. Checking that each story meets highest standards of editorial probity and accuracy and that they are intelligible to anyone with a basic understanding of financial markets. Managing a group of journalists directly to make the most of opportunities for collaboration and to ensure deadlines and standards are met and to help them bring their editorial ideas to fruition. Driving standards of originality and editorial quality across the newsroom. Making sure GlobalCapital makes the best of its stories by keeping the homepage updated throughout the day and working with editorial and marketing teams to ensure opportunities are taken to drive audience engagement through social media and special campaigns. Deputise for the editor when they are on other duties or travelling. Working Thursday nights alongside the editor, sub-editors and production team to produce the weekly print edition. Eventually, the Deputy Editor will be expected to be able to run press night on their own if the Editor is away. Key attributes At least three years of experience as an editor in a newsroom is all but essential. You will be at an advantage if you have experience as a financial trade publication editor, preferably one that publishes daily. News judgement - ability to commission the best capital markets stories with the most highly polished angles and to spot and avoid regurgitating press releases and so on. A stickler for applying house style, simple but engaging writing, and flawless spelling, grammar and punctuation. Quick and accurate editing abilities. A critical eye for nuance and detail. The ability to put oneself in the place of a GlobalCapital reader when editing copy. Ability to write engaging headlines, crossheads and captions and the skill to know what data and pictures will enhance the appearance of a story. The ability to judge what stories will appeal a broader audience and the ability to edit for both a general and a financially literate audience. Help develop angles so that all GC stories are original and are conveyed in GC's distinctive voice. An interest and willingness to learn about different parts of the capital and derivatives markets. The ability to translate financial complexity and jargon into plain English that is a pleasure to read. The authority to send copy back for rewriting when necessary and the experience to know when to do this and how to help journalists develop their skills. Ability to keep the newsroom running to schedule, in particular taking charge of a small section of the newsroom. Experience of training journalists to improve, including experience of formal and informal performance management techniques. Up to date knowledge of laws around defamation, data usage and copyright.
