Job Description: With the aid of regular clinical supervision, the post holder will be responsible for the assessment of patient need and the development, implementation and evaluation of Occupational Therapy treatment and programmes of care, with the emphasis on group and individual interventions and recovery-focused care. To provide evidence-based, occupational therapy knowledge and skills to the multidisciplinary team (MDT). To facilitate, plan and develop a high-quality programme of therapeutic and occupational activities for patients and be involved in ward-based delivery of these as well as in the community, linking in with wider statutory agencies and voluntary organisations to promote social inclusion. To be a proactive member of the MDT in respect of communication, team administration, quality of service and service development. To educate and supervise unqualified staff and students. Preliminary duties within the Company: To work within the integrated care team to encourage effective team working, implementing and maintaining highly professional standards of care within the team. As a member of the MDT to be responsible for the assessment of need and the planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care plans. To offer both individual and specialist group therapy and to deliver direct patient care, according to individual care plans and in response to the identified need. To provide indirect care by supporting and empowering junior staff. To maintain written electronic records of all patients, to record information and write reports as necessary. To participate in clinical meetings and to lead, where necessary, handover of care to all staff involved in patient care. To promote evidence-based practice that supports social inclusion and a recovery approach within care planning and the CPA process. To ensure all aspects of relevant Mental Health Legislation are being adhered to. In addition, to ensure the requirements of all current legislation are observed. To ensure the assessments of patient’s functional abilities are completed using a range of standardised and non- standardised tools as required. Main duties and responsibilities: To be responsible for assessing and treating all patients using a range of approaches To be responsible for ensuring that all patients take part in recovery planning and that recovery goals and programmes are regularly reviewed To keep up to date with new treatment methods and be actively involved in research projects relating to mental health To attend Multidisciplinary meetings, reviews, CPA’s and case conferences as required To evaluate treatment and keep accurate records maintaining high professional standards and complying with current legislation To provide support and guidance for lower grades of staff and seeking advice from the Head of Therapies with complex cases where necessary to assist in the treatment of such cases. To assist in maintaining high professional standards in clinical and professional matters, complying with the Code of Ethics as well as local and national policies To be responsible for specific administrative duties allocated by the Head of Therapies, keeping relevant records of stock/statistics etc. To be aware of responsibilities under current legislation To encourage good communication with other disciplines keeping the Head of Therapies informed appropriately To ensure security of the therapy rooms and its resources, in conjunction with all staff using its facilities Be responsible to undertake line management supervision, appraisals, sickness & absence reviews, produce performance management frameworks and the necessary risk assessments for the allocated OTAs To partake in the teaching of staff members in relation to OT, rehab and recovery To adhere to the rules of confidentiality at all times To produce accurate and professional reports for CPA meetings Professional: To develop the role of the OT and always act in a professional manner and as a good role model. To work as part of the multidisciplinary team and develop good team working skills. To always comply with the code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Occupational Therapists. To actively promote a positive image of mental health care to members of the public, voluntary and other agencies. To demonstrate continued professional development in Occupational Therapy To be responsible for attending and participating in regular supervision, support meetings and professional groups. To keep up-to-date with mandatory training. Act as a mentor and oversee junior staff and students. Managerial: To support the senior OT/therapy team in introducing and evaluating To be supportive to the MDT and encourage effective team working, implementing and maintaining high professional standards within the team. To undertake audits/quality assurance programmes under supervision as required. To contribute towards the improved standards of service by participating in in-service education, case discussions and other relevant meetings. To carry out administrative duties as directed, including the collection and submission of timely and accurate data. Personal Responsibility Participate in the annual appraisal and ongoing supervision processes, taking responsibility for own continuing professional development. Demonstrate that continuing professional development activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current and future practice. Ensure that continuing professional development has contributed to quality of practice and service delivery. Seek to ensure that continuing professional development benefits the service user. Maintain a continuous, up to date and accurate record of continuing professional development activities through the development of a professional portfolio. Adhere to the code of ethics and professional conduct as laid down by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT). Maintain registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and provide evidence for the organisation. Adhere to the standards of conduct, performance and ethics, and the standards of proficiency as laid down by the HCPC and COT. Observe confidentiality at all times. Seek advice and support from Professional Lead or clinical supervisor whenever necessary. Participate in annual performance appraisal identifying, developing and agreeing own development plan with line manager using the Trust appraisal process. Risk Management: All staff need a basic working knowledge of risk management. They all have a responsibility to identify and report risks, hazards, incidents, accidents and near misses promptly, in accordance with Trust Policy. All staff must be familiar with emergency procedures, risk management systems and incident management in their workplace. Essential Requirements for the role: Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in occupational therapy Current HCPC registration Excellent organisation and time management skills The ability to work both independently and as part of a team Initiative and creativity Excellent verbal and written communication skills Up to date knowledge of OT models and theories Ability to reflect on and criticise own performance Computer skills Understanding and appreciation of CPD An awareness of the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007) Knowledge of MOCA would be advantageous but not essential Desirables: Current UK Driving License Professional Practice Education Accreditation (APPLE) Post-registration experience in mental health Experience of involvement in audit, and gaining service user feedback. Professional practice education of occupational therapy students Experience of working in a rehabilitation setting Experience of working with male and female patients Postgraduate qualifications in related subject areas Up to date knowledge of relevant mental health legislation and policy Presentation and teaching skills Knowledge: Knowledge of current national policies, legislation and professional standards in practice. Knowledge of relevant models of care. Knowledge of evidence-based, occupationally focused assessments relevant to the client group. Knowledge of specialist occupationally focused interventions relevant to the client group. Skills: Excellent communication skills. Able to develop and maintain communication with people about difficult and sensitive matters/situations. Work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. Excellent problem-solving skills. Sound theoretical base. Able to assess occupational function and contribute to overall assessment of health and well- being needs. Able to select and use appropriate standardised assessments.
