Overview

Young Refugee Caseworker Volunteer Location: Based out of Hull office Commitment: Weekly on Tuesday afternoon and/or a Thursday Morning for a minimum of 6 months. Working experience with vulnerable people of different backgrounds. Knowledge with asylum seekers & refugees entitlements would be an advantage, as would be speaking additional languages. About the role One of the vulnerable groups we work with is young refugees who are children and young people aged 15 up to 25 seeking safety. Our work helps young people to understand what they are entitled to and develops their skills to cope with their situation and to know what to do next. As a Young Refugee Caseworker Volunteer you will work one to one with vulnerable children and young people who need support to help ensure a child or young person's voice is heard and that they can access support services that they are entitled to. Caseworkers will work alongside service users to address their emotional and practical needs About the Team We use kindness to help those in crisis. Every year thousands of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants arrive in the UK with little support, money, or opportunities. Sometimes these people don't even have the means to find and contact their loved ones back home. It's our job to do what we can to help. We're a diverse, busy team dotted all over the country who share the common goal of doing what we can to make refugee lives that little bit brighter. From providing emotional support to reuniting families, we're committed to helping as many people as we can in as many ways as we can. Seeing the look on someone's face when they are put back in contact with a partner, parent, or child, that they thought they'd never see again is simply priceless. About the person You need to have good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills although full training will be given for any technical requirements. Also someone who has: Excellent communication skills, preferably with experience in active listening or supporting others An understanding of working with young people and/or casework A good communicator and empathetic about the situation and needs of young people and young refugees Awareness of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues, including those relating to gender Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner Able to work alone with minimum supervisions as well as part of a team Caring, supportive, helpful with a non-judgemental attitude and able to instil and maintain confidences Personally resilient as you may need to deal with difficult or challenging situations Enthusiastic about youth, learning and integration Able to keep the service user at the heart of what you do, supporting the Red Cross to understand service user needs and the difference our role makes Able to speak good English; plus knowledge of a foreign language would be useful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population Willing to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to the Society's Equal Opportunities Policy This role requires volunteers to have a DBS / PVG / Access NI check to the appropriate level, this requires an update every three years. Tasks included in this Role: Undertaking one to one appointments with service users, either face to face or by telephone Working to an agreed action plan with the service user Supporting the service user to access other services, accompanying them to appointments and offering onward referral to relevant bodies as appropriate Maintaining effective client records using our data capture system Beneficiary Relationship Manager including communication effectively with project staff and feeding back key information from appointments/meetings Identifying and responding appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues Working effectively with interpreters Providing advice and support with age disputes, moving from one local authority to another, finding their family members or family reunion. Turning 18, becoming an adult and the system changes this can create. However (subject to a risk assessment, safeguarding requirements and parental consent) those aged 15-17 can be involved in a variety of activities such as promoting the service, supporting service volunteers and undertaking training.
