Senior Systems Engineer

Leonardo ,
Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh

Overview

Leonardo is a global leader in defence electronics and delivers mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare and surveillance across land, sea and air. Working within Leonardo's Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh, the successful candidate will work to develop new and improve existing features for an established fire-control radar system. This is a highly demanding sector of business addressing customer requirements for flexible, high performance systems capable of performing the role of primary sensor on some of the world's most technically advanced combat aircraft. Contemporary radar systems are both highly evolved and complex. This role resides at the heart of these exciting systems, developing the control and interface definitions necessary to coordinate sub-system components to achieve an increasingly diverse range of system-level functions. Interfacing our leading edge products to the avionics systems of high performance jet aircraft and defining methods of adaptively managing finite system resources in highly dynamic and varied operational engagement scenarios. This systems engineering vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for an individual to develop and grow into a pivotal post at Leonardo, supporting the further development of an in-service Fire Control Radar product. There is opportunity to work directly with the end user, taking feedback to implement further improvements to the existing design. The work is technically demanding requiring the successful candidate to rapidly develop skills in radar system design and the operational complexities of modern radar systems. The successful candidate will have experience in multiple aspects of the systems engineering lifecycle and is expected to operate effectively with engineers drawn from a potentially diverse group of engineering disciplines. The role involves analysing and presenting large volumes of radar data in order to provide technical support to internal and external customers. The candidate will develop concepts, architectures and define system designs - taking these forward to implementation, integration, test and evaluation. Key Responsibilities Support the Systems Team Lead to undertake own task as part of a wider programme to integrate new functionality into the existing radar software. Ownership of aspects of product design, development & qualification. Creating, updating and managing requirements. Creating, updating and managing test procedures to prove system requirements. Analysis of large and complex volumes of radar data from ground and flight trials Managing end-to-end lifecycle traceability & reporting to achieve certification and delivery. Technical aptitude and willingness to learn about radar systems and the ability to address the challenges of introducing new technologies into in-service equipment. Perform technical peer reviews. Interact with a range or technical & non-technical project stakeholders across multiple disciplines. Actively support knowledge sharing and exploitation of best practice. This role is predominantly office based but occasional UK/Europe travel may be required to support the programme. Occasional support to ground and/or flight trials will be required off-site. Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required The successful candidate will have practical experience of engineering within a commercial environment or an equivalent research and development organisation. Applicants will be degree qualified in an appropriate numerate discipline and demonstrate exceptional team working and interpersonal skills to ensure that effective links with internal and external customers are maintained and developed. Previous radar experience is preferred but not mandatory. Experience of using MATLAB for modelling and data analysis is desirable. The candidate will be proficient in using the Microsoft Office toolset as well as requirements and configuration management tools such as DOORS. Candidates will be able to effectively manage their own time, potentially across multiple activities. Current UK SC clearance or the ability to achieve SC clearance is required.
