AutoReqId: 847BR Additional info: THE ROLES Wellcome is looking for two or three people to join the Board of Governors and bring fresh perspectives on our work. Governors are responsible for shaping Wellcome's vision and long-term strategy and upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability. They ensure that all Wellcome's activities focus on results and, ultimately, improving people's health. THE CANDIDATES We are looking for people with a strong scientific background with a broad range of experience and a general appreciation of medical science and its role in society particularly in the following areas: * Understanding the scientific method and what constitutes world class science, ideally across broad subject areas. Ability to apply this expertise to oversight of Wellcome's activities * Knowing where world class science resides internationally across areas, with a strong network of research contacts * Appreciation of the conceptual and technical frontiers of current science and, of those, which are likely to be addressable on different timescales * An understanding of how science can be used to improve health for all The following characteristics would also be desirable: * Understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and clinical practice, from early stage research through to the delivery of therapeutics, diagnostics and interventions. * Insights into international policy-making related to health * A collegial and inclusive style It would prove useful for this role if you also have experience of leading organisations with global reach and influence as either an executive or non-executive Wellcome encourages applications from people with all backgrounds who share our values and vision, with the relevant experience, whether public, private or voluntary.
