Overview

Job Description

Isotropic is seeking an experienced Senior RF MMIC Engineer to lead the design and development of the RF frontend system for Isotropic's Ku and Ka band satellite communication terminals. The role will drive the decision-making process around system level partitioning and architecture, development of key subsystems and components and will lead Isotropic's MMIC strategy. This includes analyzing system architectures, defining detailed module level and component level specifications, and working with IC vendors to identify custom and/or COTS solutions that meet performance and cost requirements. The candidate will be expected to take ownership of the design, simulation, integration, and test of all RF components including HPAs, LNAs, beamformers, mixers, PLLs, signal distribution, and filtering. The candidate should have experience in transistor level IC design, tape-out and measurement, and IC packaging and integration in the Ku and Ka frequency bands. A successful candidate should be familiar with the trades around various foundry technology nodes in both performance and cost. Designing and simulating the entire circuit chain and analyzing its impact on the product size, cost, performance will be a critical responsibility. Experience in SATCOM terminal design, phased array design, and design for high-volume low-cost manufacturing is highly desirable. The candidate should understand DFM and DFT trades to be applied during the design of the terminal. The candidate should be comfortable with vendor and customer interactions and presentations. Experience with design, control, calibration, pointing and tracking, and productization of electrically-steered communication terminals is a strong qualifying factor. The candidate should be knowledgeable in PCB substrate selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, and high frequency PCB simulation. The successful candidate will proactively apply critical thinking skills to identify potential problems and solutions that others might miss. They will aggressively pursue challenging goals, make accurate key decisions, and strive for excellence with minimal oversight. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: * Lead the RF system architecture design * Participate in discussions regarding technology development roadmaps * Develop MMIC strategy * Design, simulation, test, and documentation of RF sub-system * Derive module and component requirements * Detailed simulations of systems, modules, PCBs, and components * Interact with IC design houses, foundries and vendors * Customer presentations * Create test plans and verify designs in the lab * Optimize design for calibration requirements as well as DFM and DFT Requirements * BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Electrical, Communications, Microwave, or related Engineering discipline * 10+ years of experience in the fields of Microwave Circuits, MMIC Development, SATCOM Terminals, Phased Arrays, Signal Processing, Systems Engineering, and/or RF engineering * Experience with transistor level IC design, tape-out, and test in the Ku/Ka frequency bands in at least one of the technology nodes: CMOS, CMOS-SOI, SiGe, GaAs, GaN * Knowledge of a broad range of IC technology nodes and how they impact performance and cost * Experience in VSAT terminal design and/or phased arrays * Experience in RF system architecture design and simulation * Knowledge of circuit topologies, critical design parameters and trades around HPA, LNA, Vector Modulator, Switch, Mixer, and other frontend MMICs * Highly skilled in the use of RF measurement equipment including spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, oscilloscopes, power meters, etc. * PCB design, layout, simulation, and test * Knowledge of antenna design and characteristics * Experience with satellite link analysis * Software Experience: Agilent ADS, HFSS, MATLAB Other Abilities: * Background in phased array development highly desirable * Ability to communicate calmly in a well thought out response, verbal and written * Interpersonal skills to effectively work with Isotropic staff internally as well as working effectively with suppliers and customers * Ability to effectively present information in team meetings and design reviews as needed * Ability to travel on request (not expected to exceed 20%). Benefits Isotropic Systems is a pre-revenue start-up, working on cutting edge technology in the satellite communications industry.
