Job Description

The Legal Directorate (LD) performs a wide-ranging legal advisory and support role for the Bank of England. It works closely with business areas across the Bank and the PRA on a wide range of key UK and international issues, covering areas such as current and prospective UK and EU legislation, banking and market operations, financial stability, prudential regulation, financial market infrastructure and resolution-related issues, legal risk management and issues arising from the Bank's and PRA's public status. The Legal Directorate usually provides legal advice in-house, but engages external counsel as necessary. It comprises of the General Counsel and approximately 140 other staff; and is supportive of part-time and flexible working. Alongside the General Counsel's Office, the Legal Directorate is split into five main teams: * Central Banking * Enforcement & Litigation * EU Withdrawal * Financial Stability * Insurance and Deposit Takers We are also supported by a Strategy and Operations team. Job description A technical adviser is a lawyer who forms part of a central pool of highly experienced lawyers within the Bank of England's Legal Directorate (LD) and is responsible for: * Providing legal support on a flexible basis as required across LD to assist it in managing peaks of demand. * Delivering specific legal products as required across a range of areas, such as preparing notes of advice or drafting legal advice or instructions to counsel. * Providing support and advice to other lawyers in LD in the delivery of their legal support to the Bank. * Delivering training to LD and preparing know-how in relation to their areas of legal expertise that are relevant to the Bank's work. Role Requirements Minimum Criteria * Qualified barrister or solicitor over 10 year PQE. * Experience of acting as a lawyer in a senior role, such as partner in private practice or head of an in house legal function. Essential Criteria * Experience in employment law. * Outstanding legal analytical and drafting skills. * Outstanding legal risk awareness, evaluation and management skills including an ability to create solutions and deliver pragmatic outcome-focussed judgements that take account of the business environment. * Outstanding training and presentation skills. * Ability to work flexibly across a wide range of legal areas, potentially with limited background.
