Job Description
Middle Grade in Emergency Medicine It is an exciting time to come and join the team as a Middle Grade in Emergency Medicine at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Not only are we in the Top 20 performing Emergency Departments in the country but we are also undergoing a major reconfiguration of our emergency care pathways which will transform the way our acute and emergency services function. The Emergency Department currently sees nearly 55,000 new patients per year and is a designated trauma unit. We have a wide catchment across South Wiltshire, West Hampshire and North Dorset. We are a tertiary referral centre for Plastic Surgery/Burns and Spinal Injury and have strong links supporting the Military population based in the local area. The Emergency Department is modern, well-equipped and comprises of a 3 bedded Resus, 10 bedded Majors, 6 Minors cubicles, a separate Paediatric area and an 8 bedded Short Stay Emergency Unit (SSEU). You will be joining a dynamic team of 10.0 wte Emergency Medicine Consultants, a brand new tier of 6 Middle Grades (which includes 3 Specialist Trainees and is likely to expand over time), 12 junior doctors (GPVTS, FY2 and ACCS grade) and an established ENP service. Our Department is currently reviewing and looking to upskill areas of our workforce and are exploring options around utilising Advanced Practitioners and Paramedic Practitioners within the Emergency Department to support business as usual and build in additional resilience. The existing consultant body contains expertise in airway management, pre-hospital care, point of care ultrasound, education, trauma, mental health, toxicology and chemical incidents, paediatric emergency medicine, geriatric medicine and patient safety. We are looking for candidates who are keen to become part of a progressive, innovative and dynamic team who are keen to work to improve patient care and implement new ways of working within the department. The successful candidate must be an excellent team player, committed to the delivery of high quality patient care. You will participate in a six week rolling rota which is compliant with the new junior doctor's contract and provides 24 hour support for the Emergency Medicine junior doctors. The rota is now being trialled as an annualised rota to give staff more flexible ways of working. The rota has built in opportunity for study leave and generous compensatory time off. The 10 Emergency Medicine Consultants cover the shop floor until midnight seven days a week providing additional senior support for 16 hours a day. The Department will accept alternative requests to this rota from the post holder or suitable candidate and if alternative requests for working patterns can be accommodated then these will be given due consideration. We are a forward-thinking, values based organisation that will support you in your development and help you to achieve your personal career goals. The department actively supports staff training and development and is committed to ensure a sustainable work life balance exists. We would welcome applications from those wanting to work flexibly or less than full time. These registrar equivalent posts offer an excellent opportunity to work in a progressive and supportive Emergency Department with a recognised emphasis on learning and development. There is strong Consultant supervision with access to a regular teaching programme and the opportunity to participate in audit and other governance activities. You will be given equivalent teaching and training as our StRs and will be supported in working towards a certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) if you wish. Education, training and development of staff is a top priority to the Emergency Department at Salisbury Hospital and is actively encouraged to support development of our Doctors for the future. There is scope for these posts to be extended and we are actively exploring SAS posts with our Medical Directorate.
