Department Overview The Communications Directorate is responsible for managing and developing the Bank's external and internal communications. We manage the relationships with key stakeholder groups including the Media and Parliament, as well as providing a Public Enquires function. We work with a wide range of colleagues to develop and deliver the Bank's programme of outreach and education, which includes building strategic partnerships with other organisations and running the Bank's Museum. We also develop and maintain our external website and social media presence and produce the Bank's flagship publications, including the Inflation Report and Financial Stability Report. In addition we lead on the development of the Bank's strategic plan, helping to ensure it achieves its desired outcomes, monitoring and reporting on delivery of the plan to the Executive Director Committee, Court and the wider Bank The Bank of England produces lots of data, covering topics like money, banknotes, interest rates, exchange rates and mortgages. We publish these on a regular basis to support our policy and operational decisions. You will use your journalistic skills to make sense of the data and produce stories that will be of interest to our core audiences. This will include crafting articles, interactive stories and social media content. You will join our Content team in Communications as our sole Data Journalist. You will work alongside teams of graphic designers, content writers, video producers, social media specialists and web publishers to produce engaging and insightful data journalism. You will be required to build strong working relationships with other partners outside of our division, in particular with our data owners in 'Statistics' and 'Advanced Analytics' and analysts in 'Monetary Analysis' and 'Financial Stability' departments. Responsibilities Generating and developing high-quality editorial ideas based on data, and turning them into digital products (for example, articles, explainers, interactive charts, social media posts) Co-ordinating and managing your own projects Working with statisticians, economists and analysts and ensure accuracy does not compromise clarity of messages and usability of our content Requirements Essential skills Degree in journalism or a related subject or equivalent practical experience in journalism or storytelling Understanding and experience in working with statistics and data Practical experience of producing digital content Experience of generating original story ideas and converting them into impactful content Knowledge and understanding of the strengths and demands of different content platforms, including the web and social media channels Practical experience in using data tools such as Excel to analyse and find stories in data Desirable skills Knowledge of Tableau, R, Flourish or similar data visualisation platforms Practical experience of data visualisation best practice. An understanding or knowledge of data visualisation story-telling formats (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/jQuery) An understanding the role of the Bank of England and economic principles The Bank of England is committed to diversity and equal opportunities.
