An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced haematology/BMT nurse to join the Apheresis team working as part of the Wessex Regional Blood and Marrow Transplant service based in University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The Wessex Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit in Southampton provides regional services for patients requiring blood and marrow transplantation for a wide range of haematological conditions. The unit opened in 2001 and now performs over 200 transplants per year, and has some of the best outcomes in the country. Patients are referred from throughout the Wessex Region, including the Channel Islands ABOUT THE TEAM Our Apheresis team consists of Lead Nurse for Apheresis and apheresis trained members of staff from the combined haematology and oncology day unit. The team provides patient centred, holistic care to patients undergoing apheresis in the day case setting. The procedures undertaken include adult and paediatric stem cell harvest, therapeutic plasma exchange and leukodepletion. The service is always evolving, and forthcoming developments include red cell exchange and the introduction of CAR T cell therapies, and you will be contributing to the development of these services. As the Sister / Charge Nurse for Apheresis you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge and undertake a range of nurse led activities with the appropriate training, such as history taking and physical assessment and supplementary or nonmedical independent prescriber. The transplant service has full accreditation with both JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee of ICE and EBMT) and the HTA (Human Tissue Authority), and within this role you will contribute to the ongoing Quality Management programme and any future inspections of the service. You will have particular responsibility in relation to following and maintaining HTA standards. WHAT YOU'LL DO As the Sister / Charge Nurse for Apheresis you will have primary responsibility for the provision of specialist nursing for patients undergoing apheresis procedures, practicing autonomously as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team. You will provide specialist advice, education and support to patients, carers and other health care professionals. You will act as deputy in the absence of the Lead Nurse for Apheresis. You will work collaboratively with the daycase service to support the overall delivery of care in the department. Work with the apheresis team to provide seam less care for patients undergoing apheresis. Work with the apheresis team to help continue with the development of the service. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR The successful applicant will have knowledge of the care of a patient undergoing apheresis. They will also have experience of haematology nursing and blood or marrow transplant. You will need to have recent relevant experience of working at band 5 or above within this speciality. You will be self motivated to develop, have excellent communication skills, able to work autonomously within the Multi-disciplinary team, and demonstrate excellent decision making skills.
