Job Description

We are recruiting a permanent part time Band 7 specialising in community neurological rehabilitation within the community dietetic team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). This is a part time post working 15 hours per week and is based at the Western Community Hospital in Southampton. This post holder will provide cover to the neurological rehabilitation wards as well as the community neurological rehabilitation service. They will work with, and provide line management for a Band 6 dietitian. We are looking for an HCPC registered dietitian who has a keen interest and background in dietetic management of neurological disorders. The post holder will have a desire to lead and develop a service and be keen to develop their line management skills. ABOUT THE TEAM UHS is a leading teaching hospital, hosting a wide range of specialist tertiary services and a nutrition biomedical research centre. The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 100 staff, with clinical experts working across the range of specialties, providing both acute and community services. You will join the community dietetic team but be based within the neurological rehabilitation team at the Western community hospital. This is a busy, hardworking team known for its friendliness, support and development opportunities. The dietitian is very well integrated into both the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation teams. The community team looks after patients with neurological disorders across Southampton and South West Hampshire and the post holder will be expected to undertake visits independently across this geographical area. The community dietetic team is based at the Royal South Hants hospital and covers many specialities including community hospitals, home enteral tube feeding, diabetes, prescribing support, paediatric special needs and mental health and learning disabilities. The team meet regularly for operational and CPD sessions and also links in with the acute dietetic service at Southampton general hospital. Peer supervision is encouraged. Our service operates Monday to Friday. The working days of the week for this role can be negotiated with the successful applicant. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will: * Provide a clinical service to the neurological rehabilitation teams (in and outpatients) as a key member of the multidisciplinary team. * Provide specialist dietary advice to in and outpatients with progressive neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, Parkinsons disease and Huntingtons chorea and acute conditions such as Stroke and Hypoxic Brain injury. This will involve working on the wards and visiting patients in their own homes and nursing and residential homes * Act as a key worker for identified patients * You will have neurological dietetics clinical experience, which must include significant expertise in managing all forms of oral and enteral nutrition support, and dealing with potential complications encountered. * Line manage a band 6 dietitian and provide clinical supervision for other band 6 dietitians * Link in with neurological rehabilitation managers and represent dietetics at relevant meetings * Be involved with the supervision and support of junior dietitians and dietetic assistants as well as student training for B and C placements from the University of Surrey. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in neurological rehabilitation and nutrition support and, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. Flexibility and the ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is essential. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an MDT as a highly specialist dietitian, and have the confidence to present and discuss your professional opinion with colleagues. A good understanding of neurological rehabilitation and the various dietetic and medical treatments available is essential along with the ability to independently plan and prioritise a busy caseload in an efficient and organised manner. An understanding of service development and previous experience of supervision and line management would be helpful.
