Job Description

Title: Patient/Public Involvement (PPI) Expert Adviser Number of Positions: 3 Job Summary: The Good Clinical Trials Collaborative is looking for up to three PPI expert advisers to join its Steering Group AutoReqId: 842BR Additional info: Randomised clinical trials are essential to advancing evidence-based medicine and improving human health. Results from well-designed randomised trials tell us the difference between a promising medical intervention and a proven treatment. Their results inform patient care and public health. Researchers running clinical trials must comply with a complex system of regulations and guidelines that aim to reduce risk, provide clarity and standardise approaches. However, confusing and outdated guidelines have driven up costs through waste, delay and failure, and reduces the availability of proven and affordable treatments for many important health conditions. Launched in June 2020, the Good Clinical Trials Collaborative (GCTC), sponsored by Wellcome, the Gates Foundation and the African Academy of Sciences, is developing new guidelines to support a more effective regulatory environment for randomised trials - enabling researchers to more efficiently conduct randomised clinical trials that are needed to improve patient care. The guidelines will address the principles of randomised clinical trials for all types of healthcare interventions, in all settings, and the GCTC will advocate globally for their adoption by triallists and regulators. Our foundational principles are that good trials look after patients and look after results. The guidelines will: * be grounded in scientific principles * be easy to understand * be generalisable * be proportionate and flexible * promote critical thinking and innovation The GCTC team is based at Wellcome and led by Martin Landray, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Nuffield Department of Population Health, Oxford University. We are looking for up to three independent patient/public involvement (PPI) expert advisers to join the GCTC Steering group. The Steering group will be made up of individuals who will help the GCTC to understand and account for the global and diverse nature of the project, and to consider the perspectives of all groups who partner to run clinical trials, including trial participants, healthcare professionals, industry, academia and regulators. The group will meet once every 3 to 4 months before the end of Sep 2021, the GCTC's projected end date. Meetings will be held remotely for the foreseeable future with the first meeting in July 2020. Division: Strategy Division Experience & Skills: The role of the Steering Group and its members is to: * Provide strategic guidance, challenge and advice to the GCTC * Advise on the context of the GCTC's work, including relevant changes to the regulatory and clinical trial landscape * Help identify and support opportunities to further the work and impact of the GCTC * Consider risks to the success of the GCTC and propose suitable mitigating actions where appropriate The GCTC Steering group will be strengthened by PPI expert advisers who can support the GCTC team to 1) better understand the experiences, motivations, requirements, concerns and questions that participants in randomised clinical trials have and 2) translate that understanding into improving the outputs of the project. We are looking for PPI expert advisers that: * Are open-minded and creative * Can help the group to explore a range of relevant perspectives beyond their own direct experience * Have experience in providing strategic advice to large-scale initiatives * Are comfortable in a multidisciplinary environment * Are motivated to drive a programme seeking change at a macro level * Work collaboratively and challenge constructively Advisers would ideally also meet one/more of the following criteria: * Have membership of or strong connections with an established network or advocacy group for improving health from a patient/service user or public perspective. * Have expertise in working in low- and middle-income countries Membership of the GCTC Steering Group: * Will begin in July 2020 and end in September 2021 when the project ends, and consist of approximately 4.5 days a year * Will reimburse independent advisers (including PPI expert advisers) at 500 GBP per day, as an inconvenience fee plus any reasonable expenses incurred How to express interest: If you feel that you have the experience and skills to help the GCTC achieve its mission of improving the efficiency and quality of randomised clinical trials globally, please apply including a summary of your suitability for the role (maximum 2 pages of A4).
