Job Description
A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen with the Wessex clinical genetics service and the Nerve Tumours UK charity at The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). We are delighted to invite applications for the role of a Neurofibromatoses Specialist Advisor on a part time, fixed term basis. This position is 15 hours per week for 3 years. The band 7 post holder will provide high quality genetic counselling, accurate and up to date information and advice to families affected by Neurofibromatoses (mainly Neurofibromatosis Type1) in the Wessex and West Sussex region. ABOUT THE TEAM Based in the Wessex clinical genetics service at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, with travel to other hospitals to attend clinics, school visits, and occasional home visits to patients and families. You will be working with a friendly and professional team consisting of clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors, trainees, research and administrative staff. You will be part of a network of specialist advisors across the UK supported by the Nerve Tumours UK charity. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will be helping individuals and families adapt to and manage a diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis (mainly Type 1) including discussion of recurrence risks. You will act as a significant educational resource to the wider health care system, patients and the public. You will support national initiatives in the management and support of families with Neurofibromatoses as part of the specialist advisor network WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR We are seeking a nurse with experience working at band 6 level or equivalent to take on this senior and autonomous role, as well as extensive theoretical and practical knowledge relating to Neurofibromatoses and its management. You will be able to understand the use of research, evaluation and audit in practice as well as analyse research findings to inform practice development. You will be required to take your own initiative, work with distressed individuals in a sensitive and empathetic manner and be an excellent communicator.
