Overview
Job Description
This post is only open to those candidates who already have their NMC registration in place and have successfully completed the preceptorship programme. Please note: Newly qualified applicants or those due to qualify will be recruited via our recruitment fairs. There is no age barrier to becoming unwell in later life with both mental and physical health problems. This client group often requires a different approach to treatment and care than those occurring earlier in life. Our progressive Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) Team in North Yorkshire deliver high quality, accessible, person-centred care to the population of older people which the Trust serves, particularly in rural areas where access to hospitals can be limited. The MHSOP service offers assessment, diagnosis and treatment for older people who are suffering from depression, anxiety, dementia and other mental health problems, alongside having complex physical health problems or related frailty. Our MHSOP teams in North Yorkshire integrate some of the Stirling standards for dementia to ease anxiety and promote wellbeing as part of a wider dementia strategy to ensure that we deliver the finest dementia care, making best use of all available resources. Where we provide services, we lead by example, encouraging and influencing partners while empowering people with mental health problems and their carers to have their voices heard. Meadowfields is an 18 bed mixed gender ward for older people with organic illness (10 male beds and 8 female beds). We work collaboratively with service users and carers to develop individual well-being treatment plans. This includes identifying the person's life story, developing behaviour support plans and other assessments to support the person to move on from our services. We have a broad multi-disciplinary inpatient team that includes nurses, medical staff, a physical health care practitioner, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology. There is local access to nutrition and dietetic staff within MHSOP. We work in partnership with local Community Teams and our Care Home and Dementia Team. About the role An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Staff Nurse to join the Mental Health Older Persons inpatient service currently based at Meadowfields in York. You will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse and able to demonstrate continuing professional development, effective generic nursing skills and the confidence to meet the requirements of a Band 5 position working primarily with the older person. You will be joining an established and supportive multi-disciplinary team that is committed to delivering high quality, patient centred care. Working closely with other professionals in the team and external agencies you will provide evidence based nursing interventions, including aspects of care ranging from initial assessment, treatment monitoring, delivery of therapeutic interventions, crisis management and discharge. You will have the on going opportunity to develop your skills within the wider team in relation to the care of patients experiencing organic mental health problems, supported through supervision and on going professional development opportunities.
