About the Role We’re looking for Secure Children's Home Practitioners to join our supportive team. Experience of working with children, young people or adults within a residential, secure or similar setting is advantageous and you will also be provided with training in ‘therapeutic parenting’ as well as regular ongoing training and support to develop both personal and professional skills. To read the full Person Specification Please Click Here For Swanwick Lodge’s recruitment website Please Click Here You will work as part of a diverse and supportive team of professional carers to provide a highly structured, stimulating and caring environment for young people who may display extreme behaviour and high levels of distress, and who may have great difficulty forming and maintaining relationships. Your focus will be to act as a ‘therapeutic parent’ and role-model to the young people by forming positive, trusting relationships that enable them to feel safe and cared for. This requires you to have a great deal of patience, empathy and understanding, and the ability to be consistent, kind and respectful, even in the face of extremely challenging behaviour. You will also need the ability adapt your approach and expectations to take account of a young person’s intellectual and emotional development, which may be much younger than their actual/chronological age. Main Duties and Responsibilities To provide full ‘parental’ care for the young people that will include: basic care tasks such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, taking them shopping etc; promoting high standards of personal care and hygiene; and helping them to develop age appropriate independence in these areas. To provide therapeutic input that may include: helping young people to recover from the traumas they have experienced by reading children’s stories, playing with toys and engaging in messy play; and through helping with personal hygiene such as bathing, brushing teeth, washing/brushing hair etc. To support the young people in accessing education and healthcare and provide daily enrichment/leisure activities designed to improve their emotional, social, and physical wellbeing. To manage the behaviour of young people using positive behaviour management strategies and keep them safe using physical restraint when required. To carry out observations and assessments on young people and contribute to risk assessments, care plans, discharge summaries and written reports for reviews and secure criteria meetings. To keep accurate and detailed written reports and records of activities and expenditure. To attend regular multi-disciplinary meetings with health, education, and other professionals, parents and carers, representing the views of Hampshire County Council and assisting the young people to contribute, or representing their views. To promote and maintain relationships and work collaboratively with parents, carers and professionals/partner agencies involved with the young person to achieve the best outcome for them. To support young people who have been placed at Swanwick to understand their rights and responsibilities, the expectations and restrictions placed upon them and the reasons for them. To advocate for the young person, ensure their rights are promoted, their wishes heard and taken into account. To be aware of and promote, the needs and values of minority and ethnic groups.
