Overview

Key Technical Skills: The role holder will require a wide knowledge of Marine Engineering, and Naval Ship design experience in order to fulfil this role. Stage 1 design activities will require an ability to undertake detailed system calculations, develop 2D schematics and lead the technical aspects of supplier engagement by creation of Technical Equipment specifications and Statements of Work along with management of technical deliverables from equipment suppliers within area or responsibility. Key Leadership/People Mgmt Skills: There are no direct reports to this position. However, the role holder will be required to provide technical leadership and mentoring to more junior colleagues, and also to review colleagues’ technical deliverables. Key Interpersonal/Behavioural Skills: The role holder will be working as part of a team which will have a high level of interaction, both within the Stage 1 design team, the Stage 2 team and with the MoD customer, to develop a sound technical solution, within a tight budget. Good communication and influencing skills will be required to discharge the role effectively. Key Mental/Analytical Skills and Challenges: The role holder will be required to carry out solution appraisal along with technical assessment of suppliers’ proposals in development of the design solution. The role holder will need to frequent assess conflicting information and will need to be able to think on their feet to achieve satisfactory compromises that protect the design. At the Senior Engineer level, it is expected that these tasks will be carried out with a high degree of autonomy. 1 Produce system specification documents and develop / document solutions to meet the specification including undertaking system performance calculations. 2 Produce Technical Equipment Specifications for the equipment within area of responsibility, lead the technical assessment of candidate suppliers’ tenders, and perform the technical project management function for the resultant equipment contract. 3 Protect the programme by promptly addressing Change and Engineering issues raised against systems in area of responsibility. 4 Ensure that Stage 1 design intent is maintained through the later phases of the project. Additional Key Accountabilities: 1 Liaise with external agencies (the customer, approval authorities & subcontractors) to develop and gain authorisation of designs within scope of responsibility The role holder will have the authority and confidence to be the sole representative of the Aux systems team at important internal and external meetings. Key Outputs/Deliverables: Technical Equipment Specifications for equipment options. System performance calculations. Design Documentation for systems in area of responsibility. Embodiment of appropriate Change in the design. 3D Spatial Routed System Reviews of responsible systems.
