Overview

As an Environmental Engineer you'll look at projects from an environmental compliance and sustainability point of view, applying an environmental management system. Whereas other engineers focus on delivering capability, you'll be concerned with how this capability impacts on the environment through the life of the product. You will be looking at environmental compliance and sustainability point of view. Whereas other engineers focus on delivering capability, you’ll be concerned with how this capability impacts on the environment through the life of the vessel, and how the environment will impact on the vessel and its equipment. There will be relevant legislation, which we aim to comply with even when Defence equipment is exempted. There will be direct and indirect environmental impacts, both steady state from operation such as energy and materials use, and then the avoidable risks from say accidental discharges and potential harm to biodiversity. You will consider how climate change will impact upon our vessels through their long service life, and address some of the customer concerns such as energy security. You also need to consider materials, which may be harmful to the environment, legislatively restricted or where continued supply cannot be guaranteed. You’ll liaise with Engineers, Supply Chain, Commercial, Regulators and Operations, and so will often be viewed as a trans-functional engineer. You will also liaise with industry working groups on topics such as Design for Environment and Hazardous Materials. In supporting the Principal Environmental Engineer, you will be exposed to the other activities undertaken at a BAE Systems level, and liaise with other business units manufacturing combat systems, aircraft, submarines, munitions and land systems. Follow your passion with the following responsibilities As an Environmental Engineer you will be involved in the full design and specification process to ensure that the product’s design meets Customer, Company, and Legal requirements. This will include: - Reviewing environmental legislation and assessing its implications for this business, aiming to ensure our project meets and/or exceeds environmental requirements - Specifying the need for supplier information to identify and capture relevant environmental data and minimises obsolescence risks, and reviewing the material provided by them - Reviewing design artefacts (documents, drawings etc) with their responsible engineers to identify and mitigate environmental impacts through design - Assisting in compiling the evidence base to demonstrate that our warships deliver a sustainable capability Security/Export control Please be aware that many roles working for BAE Systems will be subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors including your nationality, any previous nationalities you have held, and/or your place of birth may limit those roles that you can perform for the organisation.
