Job Description
Purpose of the Role * To produce Permanent Way designs that comply with all best practices, Network Rail and Company standards, processes, procedures and meet the company and client's quality expectations * To ensure that surveys and designs are produced in due time Colas Rail in the United Kingdom values and encourages diversity in our workforce, regardless of background, disability or gender. Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability Principle Duties * Produce allocated Permanent Way designs within agreed timescales and required quality * Ensure that design, construction and maintenance risks are identified and mitigated during the design stages * Ensure that required Temporary Non Compliances and Derogation to standards are sought * Ensure Value Engineering through Particular Specification reviews * Attend Inter-Disciplinary Checks and constructability reviews as directed * Consult with Network Rail Gauging Engineer, Earthwork Engineer, Structural Engineer etc. * Attend Inter-Disciplinary reviews as directed * Carry out design checking * Adequately communicate and explain designs to the construction teams * Obtain feedback from the construction teams post design setting out and construction * Attend all technical and safety briefings as directed * Provide design information to the COM Coordinator representative for inclusion in the Health and Safety file as directed * Assist in internal and external audits and verification's * Weekend I Night duty as required * Collate and complete as-built survey/design information as required. * Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time. Most Challenging Parts of the Role * Produce designs within agreed timescales * Achieve Form B design acceptance from the Client without comments or actions * Ensure that all risks are identified, removed or mitigated at design stage Specific Safety Responsibilities * Post with 'safety of the Line' responsibilities (design checking) * Know own limits of competence * Instigate and attend inter-disciplinary checks and communicate effectively with Network Rail Gauging Engineer, Earthwork Engineer, Structural Engineer etc. * * Identify, remove or mitigate foreseeable risks related to survey , design, construction and maintenance of the infrastructure You are responsible for ensuring that: * Employees, Agency Staff and Contractors under your control receive * Adequate health and safety information and where appropriate, instruction/training . * You co-operate with your employer to enable any legal obligations to be complied with. * You do not recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the * Interests of health, safety or welfare. * You bring to the attention of your Manager any perceived shortcomings in health and safety arrangements or situations that you consider to be serious or present imminent danger to yourself or others. You instruct and actively encourage your staff to do likewise. EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING Essential * Education to HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent suitable experience * Proven experience in Plain Line and S&C permanent way design * Be able to use MX / BRT / CAD for Permanent Way Design unsupervised * Experience and knowledge in traditional and modern survey and design techniques * Good knowledge of permanent way renewals techniques * Computer literacy * Risk management * Robust knowledge and understanding of Network Rail and Group Standards * Understanding and relevant Health and safety and CDM regulations * Ability to drive TECHNICAL SKILLS * Certified for Incident/ Accident investigations * For positions covering the southern region a current PTS appropriate to CTRL Is required * Holder of a current full UK driving licence * Ability to identify competency standards required as a result of legislation, operational standards and safety procedures and maintain same by audit and surveillance BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES. * Possess the ability to maximise personal contribution to the business (customer focus) * Ability to analyse problems thoroughly and make good timely decisions (analysis and decision making). * Ability to build and maintain pos
