Job Title: Speciality Doctor Department: Ophthalmology Location: Milton Keynes Salary: 40,037 to 74,661 per annum Programmed Activities: 10 PAs Additional Programmed Activities: 1PA The reqirement for you to undertake additional programmed activities will be reviewed annualy Applications are invited to apply for a Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with the University of Buckingham, is a University Teaching Hospital; we conduct research and teaching on site to improve the care of our patients . The hospital is undergoing significant investment and development including a new surgical ward, a new main entrance (allowing expansion of A&E services), a new Academic Centre and a planned new Cancer Centre. We listen to each other and work together to embed our Trusts values and behaviors The successful candidate will be responsible to, and work under the supervision of the 5 Consultant Ophthalmologists. The post will provide extensive experience in the management of general ophthalmic problems. The ideal candidate will have some experience in the management of general ophthalmic problems. He/she will be expected to actively participate in all audit projects within the department. This post will not involve the post holder in participating in an on-call rota but will participate in evening clinics with booked urgent patients. As a department we are keen to develop our doctors encouraging their own professional development and goals. Please note: This post is non-residential but accommodation is subject to availability for which there will be a charge. This eye department is sub-serving Milton Keynes and immediately surrounding areas. It consists of an out-patient department and day case surgery. In-patients are admitted at Stoke Mandeville Hospital at Aylesbury, approximately 20 miles away. The Consultants at Milton Keynes Hospital are part of the Buckinghamshire group of Ophthalmologists consisting of 10 Consultant Ophthalmologists. At Milton Keynes Hospital there is a daycase ward and most eye surgeries are performed, including phacoemulsifcation cataract surgery. The out-patient eye department is in a self-contained spacious unit with 6 Consulting rooms (beside the orthoptic 6 rooms) and optometry (3 rooms) clinical areas and 2 treatment rooms which are fully equipped. Equipment includes ultrasound A & B scans, YAG and new Argon lasers [with an indirect delivery system], fundus camera and an OCT retina camera. There are 5 part-time Optometrists with contact lens and a Low Visual Aid Service. Three full-time and 3 part-time Orthoptists support the department as well as the Community Orthoptic Screening Service. The Artificial Eye Service is supported within the prothesis laboratory of dental department. The Ophthalmic Secretaries accommodation is next to the eye out-patient department. There is an active teaching programme for junior staff in Ophthalmology across Buckinghamshire of one half-day weekly based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Oxford Eye Hospital. Continuous medical education at all levels is encouraged. There is a monthly departmental audit. This happy and self-contained unit is at present situated within the hospital campus with easy access and parking, and the railway station is nearby (MK to London ~40 minutes). The Ophthalmic nursing staff play an active role in the out-patient department. OPHTHALMIC SERVICE As it is appropriate for a unit of this size, all Consultants are General Ophthalmologists who can manage any ophthalmic problem that may arise, although each surgeon has a particular special interest. Current Consultant interests are vitreo-retinal, strabismus and paediatric ophthalmology and oculo-plastics. There are optometry shared care clinics. The Orthoptists beside their standard duties perform visual field testing and biometry. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with the University of Buckingham and will also be expected to support colleagues doing these activities as part of his or her arranged job plan.
