Position Overview: Couchbase's Legal Team leverages its business-minded and practically oriented expertise to support stakeholders across the organisation , advocate for the company's best interests, and scale the business at a rapid pace. We are looking for a commercial lawyer with proven experience negotiating and closing large scale and high quality deals across a wide variety of transactions, including software licensing, partnership agreements, inbound contracts, and more. As a highly valued member of the Couchbase Legal Team, you will use your excellent judgement and communication skills to partner with both our internal business stakeholders as well as with our external customers and partners to address complex issues across diverse subject matters in an accurate, clear and thorough manner. Generally, you are a self-starter who enjoys working both independently but also collaboratively with the team when the task calls for it. You value efficiency and hone good judgment every day in your practice. This role reports to our Director, Legal - EMEA, and is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for technology, excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. Responsibilities * Drafting and Negotiation: Draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts including inbound (sales) and outbound (vendor) agreements, professional services, channel partner, non-disclosure and other commercial and technology related agreements. Leverage excellent writing and negotiation skills in negotiations to present Couchbase's positions persuasively and drive the parties to close. * Strategic Advising and Leadership :Lead all aspects of contract negotiation from start to close, including coordinating with other business stakeholders. Support the sales teams on deal structure and contract negotiations. Provide advice and guidance related to new and existing features and products, privacy and regulatory compliance and other legal matters as needed by the business. Serve as a trusted legal advisor and business partner on a variety of complex, cross-functional projects in furtherance of Couchbase's overall strategy and goals. * Operational: Continuously improve the design and implementation of internal Couchbase processes as the business scales. Seek opportunities to increase the efficiency of legal team operations. Create and advise on templates, policies and procedures in an ever-growing and evolving business. Provide training to stakeholders on relevant topics. Skills, Knowledge and Experience * Experience in software licensing including SaaS or DbaaS and Cloud Services products and contracts. * Experience in handling issues related to intellectual property and data privacy. * Experience working in either the technology transactions or commercial/corporate practice of a law firm, and/or in-house at a technology company . * Passion for closing high-quality deals while working collaboratively with our customers. * Ability to coordinate effectively across disciplines, gain trust and confidence with colleagues at many different levels throughout the company. * Clear and concise communication skills that present complex issues in plain English. * Organizational skills that effectively manage competing deadlines and deliverables in a fast moving deal engine. * Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills, with a keen attention for detail and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances. * Proven ability to operate independently and effectively across a variety of operational areas and in several jurisdictions, with the flexibility to work with colleagues in Europe and the United States to accommodate meetings and deadlines aligned to their time zones. * Fluency in English (written and spoken) required, any other European language (in particular French or German) is highly desirable. * An approachable and adaptable manner to ensure excellent communication and interaction within Couchbase, with a customer service oriented mindset. Minimum Qualifications * UK qualified lawyer (additional European qualification a bonus). * Minimum 4+ years of post qualification experience with strong academic credentials. * At least 2+ years experience working in-house.
