We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, dynamic nurse to join the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service. The successful candidate will be joining a nurse led unit that provides urgent care for cancer care patients in an acute admissions area at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The successful candidate will be joining a new team of nurses working in the biggest acute oncology unit in the country, winning the Macmillan Service Improvement award in 2016. ABOUT THE TEAM Our team consists of healthcare assistants, staff nurses, sister /charge nurses and a senior sister. The team on the Acute Oncology unit will work alongside a multidisciplinary team which includes ANP's, Registrars and Consultants. This is an exciting place to work and we are committed in supporting our staff to work effectively in a fast paced acute unit. Cancer and its treatments can cause many side effects and complications. Patients are admitted through the ANP lead telephone triage service, and are then directed to the Acute Oncology unit. The unit consists of a six trolley assessment area where we initially triage the patients and liaise with the ANP team to review the patient. The nursing team will then provide the care and treatments required. We are a 24 hour service running 7 days a week. As a member of the team you would be expected to fulfil shifts that cover this service. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Provide high standards of care for patients, carrying out all aspects of nursing care. * Plan, implement and evaluate care. Maintain clear and accurate records of observation and treatment, and to be compliant with policies/ standards of the trust. * Encourage effective working relationships and the development of a cohesive nursing team, working with a common philosophy. * Maintain competence and knowledge within ones own particular area of specialism. * Keep updated with clinical developments and research findings, supporting the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse in initiating changes benefiting the standard of care to patients and encourage staff to do the same. * Be a key member of the Acute Oncology nurse led service. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Previous cancer care experience is desirable but not essential. Flexibility of shift pattern is essential. If you have a strong focus in acute admissions and cancer care then were keen for you to join the Acute Oncology Unit. WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU You'll receive an individualised induction programme when you first start to visit all the different areas within the department. In the future, we are hoping to develop a rotational programme. Working within cancer care will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical skills whilst enhancing your knowledge of oncology and haematology. You'll be supported and encouraged to further develop your nursing career. Cancer care has a highly motivated and supportive education team who drive staff development forward. There are opportunities to develop your knowledge in cancer care nursing by attending the Wessex Cancer Alliance chemotherapy course and the 'Fundamentals of Cancer Care' course, developed by our own education team.
