Job Description
Position Title: System Engineer (Linux) Job Profile: System Operations - Technical Professional Job Family: Information Technology Infrastructure Group > System Operations Reporting to: Manager, System Operations (Unix & Storage) Position Overview The System Engineer's role is to plan, design, implement, and manage the organization's physical, and virtual Linux infrastructure according to best practices, company policy, and regulatory requirements. The System Engineer is responsible for adhering to project timelines while maintaining the highest level of accuracy, reliability, and infrastructure availability. The System Engineer will develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to ensure consistent and repeatable practices for the provisioning of physical and virtual machines running on Linux/UNIX based platforms. This role will be responsible for the management of corporate and production systems, and will assist in the day to day operational support, reporting to the Manager, System Engineering (UNIX & Storage). Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: * Participates in the translation of architecture documents into design and configuration specifications * Leads in the areas of Linux / UNIX, providing subject matter expertise * Installs and configure technology components as per the design or vendor specifications * Participates in the development of test plans and test cases, and conducts system testing of technology components * Participates in project scheduling and planning activities * Interacts with project teams in the implementation and configuration of technology solutions * Installation and configuration of Linux systems and software * Monitor, troubleshoot, administer and tune operating systems and hardware/virtual infrastructure * Perform upgrades and validation of Linux systems, software, and third party tools * Perform all related system management activities * Advise on the operations and functionality of various applications and systems * Documents and updates build and run books for Steady State Operations * Perform capacity planning analysis and other needs assessments * Develop strategies and policies to ensure best-practice based regulatory compliance and reduce legal exposure Education, Experience and Competencies: * Degree or Diploma in Computer Science or equivalent experience * One or more certifications in the corresponding: Linux, UNIX, Solaris, AIX * Minimum 4-6 years' experience deploying, managing, and administering Linux based operating systems * Familiarity with Ansible and automation technologies * Strong shell scripting/automation experience (Ansible, Perl, sed/awk etc.) * Strong system/network performance troubleshooting skills * Significant experience with RedHat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, & 8 * Experience with RedHat satellite server * Knowledge and experience with RedHat virtualization * In depth knowledge of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, HTTP, HTTP/S, FTP, NTP) is required * Knowledge of storage area networks including: Fibre Channel, iSCSI, SAN based replication, RAID etc. * In depth experience with an array of clustering technologies, encryption, virtualization and messaging technologies * Knowledge of monitoring technologies and best practices * Strong understanding of ITIL and change management policies and procedures * Ability to express oneself clearly and logically, both written and verbally * Strong organizational skills * Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of focus on customer service * Experience with SQL and Oracle databases is an asset * Experience with VMware vSphere, ESX and vCenter products an asset * Experience with Azure cloud technologies and IAC is an asset * Experience with configuration management tools
