Job Description
Job Purpose: The assistant solicitor will predominantly assist the partners/lead fee earners dealing with motor crime and regulatory cases often from the day of the incident, investigating the incident circumstances and assisting with the case through to resolution. There may be opportunity to handle a small case load of your own depending upon experience. The team predominately deal with motor crime, health & safety, environmental and nursing/care sector cases but also undertake compliance audits. This is technical and client-facing role for a well-rounded lawyer, so you will have a keen interest in building client relationships through the delivery of training and mentoring as well as in delivering first class legal solutions to complex problems. The team regularly delivers training seminars and workshops to various insurer clients and the ideal candidate will have an interest in client development and show a willingness to assist in the preparation and delivery of seminars on technical legal issues. Key Accountabilities: • Attending meetings with insured/clients and preparing detailed attendance/conference notes • Instructing Counsel and experts • Drafting appropriate legal documentation • Carrying out investigations, collating evidence and drafting witness statements • Reviewing evidence • Attending Criminal Hearings & Inquests at the Coroners Court, Magistrates' Court and Crown Court • Presenting to insurers and lay corporate clients on matters affecting the criminal work the team undertakes • The core working hours are 9am to 5pm. The assistant fee earner will be expected to work such hours as are necessary to facilitate the clients. It is expected that if the demands of work require longer hours will be worked to achieve those expectations • To ensure compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct 2011 • Adhere to the Keoghs Values • The above is not a definitive list of possible work which may be delegated • The individual may also be required to undertake the following: • Initial report/ review • Periodic review • Update reports • MI updating Experience, Skills and Qualifications: Essential: • Previous criminal litigation experience • An ability to prioritise workload • Ability to pay attention to detail • Ability to work with case management systems • The personal skills to deal with policy holders in a sensitive manner given the context within which they find themselves in • Legal qualification required i.e. Solicitor / FILEX Desirable: • Previous motor crime/road traffic experience in a defendant insurance experience • Previous police station and/or Magistrates Court duty solicitor experience • Previous Magistrates Court advocacy experience Practice Area: Technical Claims Business Unit: Crime and Regulatory Office: Keoghs London
