Job Description

Manager and Specialist Scientist for Microbiology North West London Pathology (NWLP) is a new partnership between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Trust. The partnership represents a new model for delivering pathology testing in a modern, efficient operation that manages 25 million tests per year. Our services are delivered at six hospital sites across North West London. We are offering a fantastic opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated Microbiology laboratory at Charing Cross Hospital which is part of the division of Infection and Immunity Sciences. The laboratory provides state for the art bacteriology, parasitology, mycology and some molecular services and is currently part of a molecular tender that will combine and expand the molecular diagnostics services across the whole of I&I Sciences. This post is for a Band 8a Microbiology Manager and Specialist Scientist, and is offered as a substantive recruitment. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the microbiology service under the direction of the divisional manager and deputy divisional manager for Infection and Immunity sciences and in collaboration with the other managers/specialist scientists within infection and immunity sciences. The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively to ensure that operations are harmonised within the department. There is an expectation that junior staff are developed to be multidiscipline trained across I&I sciences and the post holder will work to support and develop staff accordingly. The post holder will ensure the provision of an autonomous clinical technical service, ensuring that the teams work effectively within the department. The post holder is expected to be technically knowledgeable across the various microbiology areas, have demonstrative experience in service planning, development, validation/verification, monitoring, QC development and monitoring to satisfy ISO1589 requirements and excellent leadership to deliver change. The post holder is expected to supervise and deliver all aspects of staff management including appraisal of all relevant levels of staff within the department. As the division is moving towards a harmonised molecular diagnostic service, technical and service delivery experience in molecular diagnostics will be key and advantageous. You will be required to take responsibility for the day-to-day operational activities of the department, in conjunction with the other managers in microbiology, provide management, training and development for staff, and represent Pathology or the Trust for issues relating to their specialist area. There is an essential requirement to be able to contribute to the planning process of the department in response to clinical demand and organisational change both internal and external. The essential requirements are HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist with expert knowledge and extensive experience in Microbiology, an MSc, FIBMS or an equivalent qualification in Microbiology. A qualification in NHS management is highly desirable. You must have evidence of suitable experience of managing sections of a laboratory at a supervisory level. The successful applicant must also be able to evidence additional post graduate, advanced or higher specialist scientific education and understanding. IT literacy is high in the department and excel competency will be key in delivering many of the departmental requirements.
