Job Description

Overview Reporting to the VP Architecture, the Head of Digital Engineering is responsible for managing an in-house software engineering capability of technical staff, leading a brand-new digital function set up to transform the company's digital capability. The mission of the company's digital engineering practice is to enable the business to succeed in a rapidly changing and disrupting power market to deliver differentiated and innovative solutions . The Team will be expected to pivot from traditional software development to cloud native engineering, adopting high velocity pod based working models and enabling each business category to deliver business outcomes with greater agility, productivity and effectiveness. The Digital Engineering CoE leverages cloud technologies, seamlessly marrying it with human insights & behaviours to develop solutions that not only uncover consumer's wants and desires today, but also predict their behaviour and how they utilise their energy assets. Key responsibilities * Managing an internal digital engineering function as well as external suppliers. * Defining, leading and delivering the IT strategy for digital engineering as well as continuously striving to improve the service levels for delivery and processes. * Senior stakeholder management and communications. * Leading the internal development capability by coaching, mentoring and providing effective line management; setting clear goals, monitoring performance and supporting development as well as defining technical profiles, performance and training standards * Overseeing technological, architecture and design decisions and recommending corrective actions if needed * Defining and overseeing a consistent agile development process according to the team and business expectations * Stay up to date with state-of-the-art technology trends to propose new features and provide value and innovative solutions. * Incubate the capability to build solutions based on disruptive digital technologies such as blockchain, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. * Create and execute a high-level development plan based on multi- year technology roadmaps. * Participate in the software development community in some capacity: meetups, blogs, stack overflow, open source projects, etc. * Recommend strategic code reuse opportunities across the company * Conduct technical reviews, audit projects and ensure best practices are followed. * Manage forward resourcing and strategic workforce plans, to ensure a that there is balance between the demand on the team and the ability to fulfil the needs of the commercial teams. * Define and implement cost effective and sustainable application support models for solutions developed. Skills/experience needed * 7+ years of energy sector and software development. * Previous experience in leading digital engineering teams in a global organisation. * Significant experience of architecting delivering software solutions that are designed to be cloud native. Extensive experience of architecting solutions on Azure would be an advantage. * Extensive experience of architecting solutions using both Microsoft and Open Source technologies. * Implementation of advanced analytics solutions (including the use of artificial intelligence and UX tools) on a cloud-based platform. * Experience in understanding client requirements and mapping to digital service offerings using product management best practices. * Implementation of agile delivery methods and the associated DevOps tooling and standard operating procedures/ceremonies (eg scrum) * Proven and strong skills with ability to formulate and document conceptual solutions including design and technology to business problems. * Proven ability to forge effective working relationships at VP and C-Level. * Experience of successfully working with external vendors to deliver solutions. * Proven leadership qualities with excellent oral and written communication skills. * A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent. * MBA or advanced degree in IT related field (desirable) * Agile manifesto best practice. * Deep understanding of DevOps and Scaled Agile (SAFe). * Cloud architecture design patterns. * Good working knowledge of data engineering and data science best practice including advanced analytics tools and artificial intelligence. * Optimisation frameworks and tooling. * Project management best practice. * Up to date on latest development and technology trends and how they relate to the company's future needs * Vision to engage colleagues and motivate teams by articulating the art of the possible. * Highly innovative and lateral thinking. * Trusted and respected as a thought leader who can influence and persuade business and IT leaders * Comfortable, experienced and accomplished at working with business executives, and able to push back in a professional and diplomatic way * Highly collaborative and supportive of business and of its ideals and strategies
