Job Description

Team Overview The legal team is central to Ofcom's work, playing a critical role in the creation and implementation of regulatory policy, as well as advising on enforcement and investigations, and conducting litigation before the High Court and appeal courts. It is a professional, cohesive and friendly team of approximately 40 qualified lawyers, ranging from associate level to senior management, with diverse experience and expertise. Purpose of the Role We are seeking applications for associate level lawyers. The role is exciting and wide-ranging, covering the full spectrum of Ofcom's work and requiring you to take on diverse projects, including conducting litigation. You will work on complex and high-profile matters which are often the subject of political and public interest and debate, and which have the potential to raise new and significant points of law. You will work in collaborative, multi-disciplinary project teams including policy advisors, economists, accountants and engineers. You may also attend meetings with government departments, industry stakeholders and other regulators. Depending on the nature of individual projects, you will sometimes work as part of a team of lawyers, and sometimes more independently (with support from a legal peer reviewer and/or senior legal colleagues). Skills, knowledge and experience Appreciation of and desire to promote Ofcom's values of excellence, agility, empowerment and collaboration * Qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or equivalent); * excellent communications skills, enabling you to present your analysis clearly in written papers, and to contribute to team meetings and presentations to senior colleagues * strong analytical skills, with an ability to interpret and advise on the law but also to think strategically and creatively to solve problems and to identify and manage legal risks * a willingness to expand your expertise, including advising on areas of the law that are new to you, and learning about new industry sectors and technologies; * excellent interpersonal skills together with the ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams * effective time management, juggling and prioritising your work across a range of matters * an interest in regulation of the communications sector to deliver good outcomes for consumers and businesses. Desirable skills: * interest in how to regulate on-line content * experience advising on areas of law directly relevant to Ofcom's work, either in private practice, in-house or in the public sector; * an interest in and basic appreciation of economics; * litigation experience; * experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
