Overview

Job Description

The Opportunity Would you like to become part of an exciting team? Every nuclear facility requires demonstration that it presents an acceptably low risk to the public. This demonstration is through the production and maintenance of safety cases.Design Authority has a central role in developing, maintaining and reviewing nuclear safety cases for each of the eight operation nuclear power stations in the UK. The two Safety Case Development Branches undertake the role of design authority for the safety demonstration part that defines the safety functional requirements for the plant. This includes responsibilities such as maintaining deterministic and probabilistic safety case health and visibility, acting as Case Officer, Author and Verifier for Cat 1 and complex Cat 2 Engineering Changes, and providing safety case advice to Stations and other functions. This role involves being a key interface between the operational licensed sites and the UK nuclear regulator. Design Authority also have a responsibility as part of the setting, maintaining and oversight of the application of standards across the company. In addition to the eight operation sites, design authority has an increasing role in the support of new nuclear build at Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C and Bradwell B. As such, design authority is an opportunity to work alongside operational sites and develop into roles that directly support new nuclear build as they comeonline. As the AGR fleet move towards defueling and decommissioning, Design Authority already have a key role in delivering safe and economic transition from operation to care and maintenance on behalf of UK Plc. We are looking for experienced engineers with a proven record of delivery in a safety assessment role within a safety-critical context. We want you to contribute to, and ultimately take a lead in technically challenging work supporting the safe, reliable operation of our current fleet of nuclear power stations through to their successful transition to defuelling and decommissioning. The Person As a safety case engineer within the Design Authority function, you will beresponsible for various aspects of the specification, development and implementation of nuclear safety cases covering operation and defuelling. As a safety case engineer within the Design Authority function, you will be responsible for various aspects of the specification, development and implementation of nuclear safety cases covering operation and defuelling, providing oversight and operational support to our nuclear power stations and support to the new build aspirations of the company. Safety case engineers require multi-disciplinary competences, based on a strong engineering foundation, to provide fit-for-purpose solutions for tasks of varying complexity. The work of safety case engineers can encompass many areas including: Reactor faults and hazards. At-power and shutdown safety. Deterministic and probabilistic safety assessments. Functional capability and structural integrity principles. Operational compliance with design and statutory requirements. The successful applicants will be expected to work flexibly across these areas, with the potential to undertake work for the AGRs, Sizewell B and future business areas such as new build and end of generation. It is hoped that a successful candidate would develop their understanding of the probabilistic risk position through use of current and developing Probabilistic Safety Assessment Models and contribute to the understanding the ALARP position and how this can help develop safety justifications and support the operational dynamic ALARP position, efficiencies and optimisation. However, if better suited through experience, other routes can be taken in line with the other work areas above. oversight and operational support to our nuclear power stations and support to the new build aspirations of the company.
