Date: 03-Jun-2020 Location: Southampton, GB Company: British American Tobacco Country: United Kingdom Location: Southampton Function: Scientific Research & Development Level: Experienced Professional Appointment Type: Permanent Excellent opportunity for a graduate or mid-career toxicologist to join an FMCG FTSE 100 company, looking to contribute to building and shaping the toxicological approaches for new product categories. We have several roles available, which reflects the companies ambition to lead and shape the safety evaluations to new product categories and be the recognised leader. The role(s) will provide an opportunity to refine and develop skills as a toxicologist and work with a team to shape the safety approach taken by the company for the product lifecycle. The role holder(s) will be expected to direct and deliver toxicological assessments of ingredients, materials and final product formats in accordance to guidance from the internal Product Stewardship Council (PSC), and to propose new 'rules' of evaluation for endorsement by the PSC. You will be an integral member of the Toxicology team supporting the delivery of innovations to market, as such proactive communication with project teams, manufacturing sites, suppliers etc will be key to enable successful innovative products introduction to market. No direct reports but influences others in opportunities in new approaches & coaches/trains others in execution of activities. Key accountabilities * To recommend and guide the project teams on the toxicology evaluations & regulatory assessments, tests and design needed to build the data packages for the individual product launches * Project manage the delivery of the toxicological data for risk assessment purposes, including conducting quantitative risk assessments, and risk profiling for application in formal project management. Authors and delivers reports and presentations when necessary * Responsible to articulate and drive defined programme areas or tools that can deliver a common approach between categories that will aid the efficiency and treatment of different ingredient types or methods * Identify and suggest where new approaches can be applied and suggest changes to operating and stakeholder management procedures for subsequent approval * Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience of biology, toxicology, or chemistry * Writes toxicological assessments, publications and presentations for communication with internal and external colleagues Knowledge, Skills and Experience * Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification with good understanding of the principles of Toxicology. Ideally demonstrated technical background in regulatory toxicology test packages, particularly risk assessment. * Awareness of technical developments in toxicology & regulations (tobacco & consumer goods) * MSc in Toxicology (or another relevant subject) advantageous but not essential * May be a member of a relevant professional body such as the British Toxicology Society * Proficient computing skills to facilitate use of in-house database and skilled user of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel * Understanding of product regulations in tobacco or cosmetics, consumer goods, food, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, etc.). Basic knowledge of the contents and design of conventional tobacco and nicotine products desirable but not essential * Previous experience in some aspect of applied science, risk assessment, or product stewardship * Good attention to detail with a keen problem-solving attitude to enable the delivery of thorough and robust risk assessments * Good communication, organisational, and planning skills, and ability work both as a team member and independently * Demonstrable a positive attitude along with a drive to succeed and flexibility in adapting to new tasks and changing priorities Working Relationships * Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT * Close cooperation with all Product Stewardship group members * Write toxicological assessments and presentations for communication with external stakeholders.
