Take a fresh look at Stroke care. Over the last 12 years there has been a significant change in the way people who have had a stroke are managed. The onset of stroke is now recognised as a medical emergency. Patients can now receive 'clot busting' treatment, clot retrieval and surgical intervention for haemorrhage. The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford is looking for motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join us. We would love to hear from nurses who are willing to develop or have a keen interest in Acute Stroke. The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering and role modelling high standards of care within an MDT setting. In addition to the 10 Acute Stroke beds, we have 8 Hyper Acute monitored beds, taking patients directly from ED. There will be opportunities to look after patients during and post thrombolysis, post mechanical thrombectomy and hemi-crainectomy as well as building on knowledge and skills in hyper acute care and acute rehabilitation. The unit specialises in the acute care and patient's ongoing rehabilitation is delivered in a different location. Our average length of stay is around 5 days. We have a nursing ratio of 1 Registered Nurse to 4-6 patients. As a band 6 Stroke Specialist Nurse, not only will you have the opportunity to get involved in management and leadership opportunities such as: audit appraisals interviewing sickness management unit development Supervising and assessing students - we were nominated for the third year running for placement of the year for adult nursing (Oxford) You will also spend time developing a vast range of extended skills: v holding the Stroke Specialist nurse bleep and thrombolysis/mechanical thrombectomy pager on average 1 shift per week; v managing the stroke pathway to ensure we meet our agreed best practice and Stroke Sentinel National Audit Programme (SSNAP) targets; v liaising closely with the Emergency Department, neuro radiology, CT, MRI and vascular lab; v developing skills in assisting with mechanical thrombectomy; There are opportunities to undertake further training at Masters level such as The Stroke Management module, Advanced History Taking module and Leading Compassionate Excellence Post Graduate Certificate If you have high standards with excellent interpersonal skills and the desire to work in an innovative and progressive environment, this is the opportunity for you!
