Highlights include the centralisation of complex care across north and east London to UCLH encompassing haemato-oncology, urology, head & neck, neuro-oncology and upper GI, and building a new hospital containing 135 haematology beds, 10 theatres, leading edge imaging and the nationally commissioned Proton Beam Therapy Service. Department overview Radiotherapy services at UCLH will be delivered across two departments. The existing photon department is situated in the basement of the Podium (P-2) at University College Hospital. UCLH has been designated as one of two NHS Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) centres for the UK. The PBT department is situated in the new phase 4 building. Commissioning and training will be taking place in the centre this year and there will be a gradual ramp up of the PBT service in 2021. The photon department opened in 2005 and has four Varian TrueBeam systems with advanced imaging packages, two of the Truebeams are equipped with 6 DoF couches. The department boasts a comprehensive brachytherapy suite and a Gulmay skin unit. Around 2000 patients access the service annually. The PBT department has four Varian Probeam proton therapy systems. Once fully established, this service will treat up to 750 NHS patients and up to 250 privately funded patients a year. Each department has a pre-treatment suite. Both departments have a dedicated CT scanner with spectral capability and the PBT department also has a dedicated MRI scanner. The department delivers radiotherapy services for a broad spectrum of cancers comprising of common cancers as well as specialist treatments including a paediatric and adolescent workload, brachytherapy and isotope work, total body irradiation and sarcoma, neurological and head and neck radiotherapy. The department is delivering SABR, as well as being designated as the main centre in the south for cranial SRS. There are also close relationships with the academic department in nuclear medicine and the academic department of oncology, which has a major research interest in targeted molecular radiotherapy. The Role This role offers an opportunity to be part of the dynamic pre-treatment radiotherapy team at UCLH. The post holder will undertake rotations between the photon and proton departments. Pre-treatment delivers radiographer led breast localisation, radiographer palliative planning, organ at risk contouring and image registration. The post offers an opportunity to play a key role in technical developments and to help develop the research focus of the department.
