Job Description
What's Involved? Talking and listening to people with dementia and their carers in a sensitive and supportive way Being aware of practical and emotional needs, referring more complex issues to specialist Society staff as appropriate Providing basic information, including fact sheets and similar Society materials Providing support and encouraging people to share their experiences for the benefit of themselves and/or the wider group, as appropriate Assisting with the serving of food and refreshments where this is relevant to the activity Joining in with social activities that benefit the individual and/or the group (for example, board games, art and crafts etc) Keeping accurate and appropriate records of group activities, where applicable Informing appropriate colleagues about how well things are going, and to make constructive comments on how to improve the experience of the service users Learning about, and following, Alzheimer's Society health and safety standards at all times (including food hygiene where relevant) Developing an understanding of Alzheimer's Society activities, and other local services, so that questions/enquiries can been handled well Attending learning and development activities relevant to the role Being aware of, and committed to, Society policies and procedures such as data protection/confidentiality, equal opportunities/inclusion and code of conduct. This role will suit you if you have: An interest in volunteering to support people with dementia Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about, dementia and how it can affect individuals, their families and carers Good listening and communication skills Ability to be calm, patient and caring Ability to show empathy Punctuality and reliability Ability to complete basic records in writing (where relevant) Ability to volunteer within service boundaries An understanding of, and commitment to, confidentiality A willingness to learn about, and be committed to, the Society's values and principles A commitment to teamwork with volunteers and staff from a variety of backgrounds A commitment to attend relevant learning and development workshops. The impact you'll make... This role is essential to support staff & to stimulate & engage with people with dementia during groups. In this role you will ensure that participants feel comfortable and are able to participate.
