Senior Lecturer / Reader in Multiphase Flows for Low Carbon Energy Systems

The University of Manchester ,
Manchester, Greater Manchester

Overview

Job Description

Thermal power cycles for renewable energy generation, heat recovery and heat storage systems are expected to make a significant contribution in the drive towards a net-zero carbon economy. In order to realise this vision, new thinking and innovation are required in thermal engineering to enable the development of efficient and cost-effective heat transfer systems. The utilisation of multi-phase and phase-changing heat transfer offers the opportunity to bring about step changes in thermal performance. The Thermo-fluids group at the School of Engineering has a strong reputation in thermal hydraulics and is engaged in a wide range of research activities, which include the use of both experimental methods and modelling and simulation. The purpose of the advertised position is to enhance the group's expertise in the modelling of multi-phase thermal processes and through multi-disciplinary collaborations, to advance the development of the next generation of low-carbon thermal systems. To support our vision, we are seeking to appoint an innovative, curious and creative engineer who can lead research activities which advance understanding with modelling and simulation of the fundamental physics of multi-phase and phase-changing flow phenomena. We are looking for someone with an excellent research record, who can co-ordinate research activities within the group, develop links across the Faculty of Science and Engineering including groups in Materials Science, Chemical, Electrical and Nuclear Engineering and also lead external collaborations with the low-carbon industrial sector. You will be expected to support teaching of Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics, in our Undergraduate Engineering Programs and also lead the development of Postgraduate Course Units on multi-phase flows and low-carbon applications. We welcome applications for Senior Lecturer and Reader positions with research expertise relating to the computational modelling of multi-phase and phase-changing flows and teaching capabilities in at least one of the topics mentioned above. Industrial experience in the previously mentioned application areas is desirable. You will be hosted within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering in the School of Engineering. As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons. As the School is committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark and Athena SWAN, we would particularly welcome applications from women and the black and minority ethnic (BME) community, who are both currently under-represented at this grade. All appointments will be made on merit. The School and University are committed to the well-being and work-life balance of all staff. In addition to our attractive rewards and benefits we have a suite of family-friendly policies covering flexible working, career breaks and entitlement to enhanced paid maternity, paternity and adoption leave which are applicable to all employees.
