Overview
Governments around the world have committed to make the transition to renewable energy. This will not be possible without the flexibility and consistency that sustainable hydropower brings to the renewable energy mix. In fact, to meet climate targets and the SDGs, the International Renewable Agency (IRENA) estimates that the world will need another 1,000 GW of hydropower installed capacity in the next 30 years. This is equivalent to the amount which has been built in the last 70 years. A step change is needed. Governments need to put in place more encouraging policy and regulatory environments. Markets need to value sustainable hydropower beyond its narrow benefits as a generator of electricity and recognise that investing in hydropower enables other renewable energies. Industry needs to invest in modern technologies and put in place strong sustainability requirements. We all need to do more. The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is the international voice of sustainable hydropower. It seeks to help governments, companies, financial institutions and NGOs deliver this transition. Job description The Head of Policy will develop and deliver this vision. S/he will oversee our projects and the development and use of our sustainability standard. S/he will report to the CEO. Key tasks: Direct IHA’s research and policy work to ensure that it adds value to IHA’s strategic objectives. Build relations with partners and work closely with IRENA, IEA and UNFCCC. Represent IHA as the voice of sustainable hydropower at key international tables. Consider how the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Tools - which have been developed by a multi-stakeholder council of governments, social and environmental NGOs, international financial institutions, and companies – might be developed as the global standard for hydropower sustainability and possibly for other renewables. Support the sustainability team and multi-stakeholder council that oversees the tools. Support the IHA Board, particularly the Hydropower Policy Committee. Serve on IHA senior management team. Essential skills and attributes At least five years of experience in a senior policy position and strategy delivery. Demonstrable experience of energy, international governance, environment or water, especially with companies, investors or project financers. Excellent project management and organisational skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. High attention to detail and commitment to high standards. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Excellent interpersonal and people management skills. Proven ability to work as a team member. Demonstrated international awareness and ability to work across cultures and across stakeholder groups. Willingness to travel internationally on a regular basis Fluency in the English language. Desirable skills and attributes Experience of working in the hydropower sector. Proficiency in other languages, in particular French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Portuguese. Experience of working with or developing international industry standards and guidelines. NB.
