Overview

Caring, reliable, committed, fun and energetic support worker needed Help look after our sweet and friendly 13 year old son with autism and epilepsy - he is non verbal and very affectionate. You have to be physically fit and strong, entertaining and easy going as well as flexible. Disability experience is not crucial (but helps), a keen interest in special needs is a must. Being able to work within a team is important too as our son already has a team around him. You would need to take on 1 - 2 regular waking nightshifts per week plus a minimum of 1 - 2 regular day shifts too. In total this would amount ideally to minimum 24 - 35 hours week and some weeks more as you would have to be a bit flexible (others in the team might be on holiday etc). You do have to like dogs as we have a friendly but boisterous (and big) dog. During day time hours you would often work together with other team members to engage him in activities as well as therapy and to take him to swimming, trampolining, a bike club and his school club. He can walk short distances but otherwise uses a push chair. He does need a lot of support at all times. You would be assisting him with everyday skills as well as feeding, bathing and and all his personal care. You will also make sure that his environment stays tidy and also help with his laundry. He sometimes is also tired and unwell after a seizure and will then just need care and nurturing and patience. Sometimes accompany the family on holiday breaks. You will be trained by members of the team and the education consultant and be taught the principles of ABA - a behaviour therapy. To be considered, you have to be able to commit for a minimum of 12 months.
