Our Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology (ADS&T) business is a technical consultancy, providing advice and engineering expertise to public, regulated and private sector clients. We deliver a range of services including P3M and Business Consulting, Asset Assurance, Safety, Mechanical Design & Analysis, Communications and Systems into the Aerospace, Defence, Security, Intelligence and Government markets. The Mechanical and Facilities Engineering team within our Advanced Engineering and Technology practice is currently expanding to meet strong demand from its main clients. The team’s work supports key Defence programmes including the UK Submarine programme (both in-service and next generation vessels, as well as dockyard equipment and facilities) and high integrity structures for new Defence establishments. We also deliver a significant amount of work outside the Defence industry, making use of our strong design and analytical skills and knowledge to deliver projects for other internal or external clients. Engineers working within the team therefore have the opportunity to challenge themselves through delivering interesting and varied projects for a range of different clients and industries. Due to this expansion, we are looking for a highly experienced Mechanical Engineer to provide technical leadership and develop client relationships. This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview. The role Provide strong technical representation for Atkins to clients providing assurance of Atkins’ technical ability and the overall quality of the work delivered. Take responsibility for the internal technical governance and quality of all deliverables to several major clients. Provide technical leadership and oversee a wide group of project teams delivering to a number of key Atkins clients. Guide, mentor and support senior engineers and teams of engineers working under your purview. Provide guidance and judgement regarding methods, approaches, standards, best practice. Support bidding activities and the production of detailed proposal documents from a technical perspective with responsibility for final technical sign-off of proposal documents. Manage task delivery against Time, Cost and Quality requirements. Support our design/engineering process through reviewing and checking colleagues’ work. Develop and maintain senior technical relationships with key clients, including leading presentations and developing solutions to their problems with them. Take an active role in the strategic development of the Mechanical and Facilities Engineering team and their technical capability. Essential Criteria Degree-qualified or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, and preferably a Fellow level engineer with a suitable engineering Institution (IMechE, IStructE, etc.). Strong interpersonal skills. Leadership skills with specific experience of managing mechanical engineering and multi-disciplinary design teams. Experience of working in the defence/nuclear sector with knowledge of the related design and substantiation processes and procedures. Knowledge of the nuclear safety systems, design and safety case appreciation. Extensive experience of delivering complex infrastructure projects across a variety of different disciplines. The ability and experience to advise clients on mechanical handling systems and large infrastructure projects. Experience of cradle to grave design from requirements capture through options development, concept design, scheme design, detailed design and manufacture through to installation, testing and commissioning. A proven track record of delivering complex technical solutions in challenging timescales. Willingness to travel to clients’ sites around the country to assist in winning new work and delivering current projects. A desire to be challenged and to contribute to the success of the business. Although the role may be based in either Silchester or Bristol, travel to other Atkins' offices and various clients' sites around the country is required. Flexibility on work location is therefore a pre-requisite, with a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites highly desirable. Desirable Criteria Experience in the following technical areas is desirable: Systems/Requirements Engineering (e.g. User, System, Sub-System, Functional, Non-Functional Requirements etc.). Application of digital engineering tools and techniques. Asset Management. Testing/commissioning of assets and equipment into service.
