Position: Specialist Stoma Nurse Location: Midlands Vacancy Type: Permanent Headcount Salary: Competitive Ashfield is currently recruiting for a Stoma Nurse on behalf of our client, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative medical products focused on therapies for the management of chronic conditions. The Stoma Nurse will be responsible for the delivery of a specialist stoma care service to all patients potentially or actually requiring stoma formation. Delivery of high quality specialist nursing skills from diagnosis onwards will be provided by training, advice, counselling and supportive care to all patients and their families/carers. The nurse specialist will work autonomously in the community or hospital setting combining expert knowledge in specialist practice with advanced clinical judgment. Key Responsibilities Provide specialist nursing intervention so that the specific needs of individual patients are addressed. To meet with elective patients pre-operatively to give information and education regarding proposed surgery and stoma formation. To mark an appropriate site pre-operatively for the stoma to be positioned, taking into account both the patients' anatomy and physical and psychological wellbeing. To provide guidance, support, advice and counselling to patients and their family/carers along the patient pathway. To know when to refer on to other professionals for more specialist guidance, support, advice and counselling. To promote patient autonomy where possible through education and support so that the individual is able to make informed choices about their own care. To recognise when an individual is unable to manage their stoma care independently, either physically or psychologically and actively formulate an alternative plan of care. To act as the patients' advocate when required. To act as a role model of expert clinical practice, empowering others through effective role modelling, teaching and team working. Ensures all confidential Patient Records and any data collection is maintained in line with Company and hospital/CCG policies using patient record system (PRS) where available. Establish effective working relationships with other healthcare professionals in order to develop the service and gain appropriate referrals. Ensure full understanding of service provisions within the Trust/CCG that you are working with. Understand Business Unit objectives and goals related to product usage and new client referrals and pass additional sales opportunities to appropriate Account Manager/Regional Business Manager. Participate in educational sessions for professionals, end users and interest groups. To utilize and have a good understanding of the value of up to date research/evidence to deliver patient care and disseminate this knowledge to all members of the nursing team. Build and develop relations with Key Opinion Leaders within the Ostomy marketplace. Identify opportunities for business development by offering training and education to nursing staff/carers. Essential Skills Registered General Nurse Qualified Stoma care nursing level 5 Foundation course in stoma care nursing - level 6 Experience of colorectal nursing/stoma care nursing Teaching experience Knowledge of current advances in stoma care Able to demonstrate specific in-depth knowledge required for practice Ability to work independently and with a multi-disciplinary team Ability to manage difficult situations effectively Experience in delivering ostomy care to patients in the community and or hospital setting Has a specialist understanding of stoma types and the recommended product for each. Keeps up to date with new technologies and surgical advances in stoma care. Communicates sensitive, condition related information to patients and relatives Builds relationships with and communicates clearly with external customers including GP's, Pharmacy Advisors, Acute Stoma Care Departments and any other Trust/CCG personnel involved in the provision of nursing service Is able to work under pressure and prioritise workload to ensure that the service offered meets the expectation of the customer. Ability to identify and act upon clinical/business opportunities to increase own profile within Trust/CCG setting and achieve business objectives. Acts as a specialist resource for the sales team understands team needs and shares ideas/suggestions to support the Business Unit objectives. Builds relationships internally, specifically with customer service, marketing, regulatory and medical, and inputs as required with key wording and collation of clinical research, case studies etc. Has a flexible approach with an open mind and is prepared to change within the role to meet the current business strategy.
