Overview
Design Age Institute Director Salary Competitive Fixed Term for 3 years Founded in 1837, the Royal College of Art is the world’s leading postgraduate art and design college and has been ranked by the highly regarded QS World University Subject Rankings, as the number 1 art and design institution in the world for the last five years. Among its core audiences – students, artists and designers – the RCA brand is legendary. The generations of world-leading designers and artists who have studied or taught at the RCA is a roster of international repute. The Royal College of Art is setting up a new design institute in 2020 dedicated to supporting the UK Government’s Grand Challenge on Ageing. The new centre, the Design Age Institute (DAI), will provide a range of strategic design services to business and industry as part of the Government’s industrial strategy, which aims to position the UK as a major exporter of new products and services for the global longevity economy. This initiative builds on nearly 30 years of research and practice in inclusive design undertaken by the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (HHCD). Working with a range of national strategic partners, including The Oxford Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford University, the National Innovation Centre for Ageing at Newcastle University, the International Longevity Centre UK and the Design Museum in London, the DAI will build a national design-for-ageing network, activate a series of demonstrator projects and communicate findings and insights through public engagement. We are seeking an entrepreneurial leader with experience of working in multi-partner initiatives across academia, industry and government, to lead this timely and important national initiative. This post will work closely with the HHCD Director to initiate and develop the potential of the network, setting an ambitious research and knowledge exchange agenda, engaging new partners from industry, academia and third sector, and driving the success of a national hub of design for ageing. The Director will lead a team of researchers and designers as well as working with partners to ensure effective project delivery and impact. The post-holder will bring an outstanding track record in leading cross-disciplinary design teams and projects with industry and/or government and have experience in bringing innovation to address wider social challenges. This exceptional individual must be able to combine strategic vision with practical, on-the-ground delivery. They will be experienced in winning and delivering major design-focused grants or industry projects and engaging with diverse funders, including business investors. They will also have experience influencing and advising high-level policy agendas within government or industry, with a track record of engaging with senior leaders from different sectors. The post is designed to be full-time for the duration of the funding, but alternative arrangements will be considered, including secondments and fractional arrangements.
