Mechanical Design Engineer

My client, a leading provider of innovative, highly technical industrial components and systems, are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their advanced engineering team in Surrey. Overall Purpose To ensure the mechanical design and development of current and future products meets the requirements of the business. Key responsibilities Design and develop precision electro-mechanical assemblies and equipment including the design of components and the integration of these. Using 3D CAD system (Solidworks). Design of plastic and metal cast parts, machined parts and sintered parts whilst using knowledge of tool design. Producing manufacturing drawings to a high standard. Producing BOMs and other manufacturing information. Design housings and mechanisms to meet operational and legal requirements. Project manage specific work packages. Use documentation control and PDM / PLM solutions. Apply analysis to designs to ensure that they meet specifications. May include FEA and thermal analysis. Review and present designs to colleagues and customers Product compliance testing and reporting. Assist manufacturing team with technical advice and support. Contribute to process improvement activities. Assemble and test prototype components and systems. Assist in streamlining and developing our business processes. Personal Profile Qualifications, Education, Personal attributes and Previous Experience Required Mandatory Degree qualified in relevant discipline and likely to have achieved an MEng (or equivalent) in a related area. At least 2 years design experience in relevant industry Competent in design and drafting using a 3D CAD system (preferably Solidworks). Pro-active, driven to achieve, with enthusiasm for mechanical engineering. Strong communications skills and fluency in English both spoken and written. Interest in the design of precision electro-mechanical systems. Innovative approach to problem solving. Attention to detail to produce accurate work with minimum supervision. Experience in New Product Development. Ability to support designs with engineering calculations. Experience communicating technical solutions to external teams including suppliers, partners and customers. Experience in estimating, scheduling, managing and progress reporting on tasks. Experience of the use of documentation control and PDM / PLM solutions. Preferred 5 years design experience in relevant industries Experience of precision mechanism drive design and development. Capable of assembly and testing of electro-mechanical systems. Broad experience in material properties and selection of appropriate materials for specific applications. Understanding of manufacturing processes with their benefits and limitations. Experience of value engineering existing designs. Interest in modern manufacturing methods. Able to apply practical machine shop and assembly experience to the design of small electro- mechanical systems. Flair for industrial/product design but not at the expense of functional design and design to cost. Experience of operating in an ISO 9001 environment and to industry specific standards. Experience of design for medium volume manufacturing environments both local and offshore. Appreciation of electrical/electronic systems and electric motors design.
