Team Lead - Data Technology (Data Unit) Starting salary: London: £53,044, Hastings: £47,584 (Depending on Location) Please note this role can be based in either London or Hastings, but the successful candidate is based in Hastings extensive travel to London would be required. If so, this post in the Data Unit (Analytics and Data Division) at the Department for Transport is for you, and we’d love to hear from you The successful candidate will lead a hands-on data technology team, mostly focused on broad data engineering, part of the Data Unit (DU). The team is responsible for designing new data pipelines, working closely with the Head of the Data Unit, the Strategic Data Manager – Data Delivery Lead, and a wide range of colleagues in Digital Services, such as the Data Architect. The unit offers internal consultancy to improve existing processes, and this role would lead its technology arm. Working in partnership with colleagues in DfT Digital Service, the team lead will make sure data pipelines are compliant with digital architecture guidelines. They will be a proactive leader in the data engineering space. The Department is a major user of Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The candidate will be expected to either have in-depth knowledge of GCP, or similar experience on other cloud platforms that they would like to apply to GCP. A technology generalist keen to explore GCP would be welcome to apply to this role. The post provides a fantastic opportunity for a motivated individual to help revolutionise DFT’s and the wider transport sectors access to and use of data. It will develop the successful candidate’s skills and experience in data engineering. As a technical lead in the Data Unit, you will oversee the work of data practitioners. You will also get the opportunity to use and hone your own coding skills and pursue developments in 20% development time. The team is located in the Analytics and Data Division (ADD) which is in the Analysis and Science Directorate, but operates in synergy with DfT Digital Service. ADD leads on support to priority projects across the Department. Some examples include: • The Bus Open data programme • A project to ingest and transform big real-time data coming from Highways England APIs to conduct near real time analysis • Modelling traffic flows through ports • Modelling the data to improve the use of and gaining insight from HR data Role responsibilities include but are not limited to: •Line-managing a small team of data technologists •Managing, mentoring and coaching data professionals •Working as part of a flexible and agile team – with data scientists, data engineers, architects, user researchers and digital leads to deliver projects. •Develop fit for purpose, resilient, scalable and future-proof data integration and data process-flow services to meet user needs. •Implementation of data integration and data process-flow systems ensuring secure operation, integrity of systems and availability, in collaboration with our Digital Service •Supporting cross-departmental Data Engineering community activities •Setting the strategic direction for data integration services •Collaboration with others to review and challenge specifications and identify opportunities for a more strategic approach to delivering data integration services. •Evolve data engineering standards in line with best practice and develop the capabilities of data engineers, collaborating with partners to establish departmental standards for data operations. •In collaboration with DfT Digital Service, ensure the data infrastructure remains performant, available and secure at all times, developing contingency and failsafe platform solutions •Effectively translate and accurately communicate across technical and non-technical stakeholders as well as facilitating discussions within a multidisciplinary team. •Provide constructive feedback to your colleagues to improve everyone’s skills and working relationships. •Using your technical, data and standards skills to provide advice and support to transport projects from a data perspective. •Seize opportunities for innovation to suggest and lead ideas which you can then see through to delivery. About you The successful candidate will have: •Experience coordinating and/or managing small teams of technology professionals, such as developers or engineers •Expertise in integrating and separating data feeds in order to map, produce, transform and test new data products at an enterprise level. •Expertise in data modelling principles, understanding the opportunity for re-use and alignment between data models in different functional areas. •Cloud Data experience. Knowledge and understanding of the current stack, Google Cloud Platform, is not mandatory but you will be expected to quickly transfer your knowledge in any cloud supplier to GCP.
