World Leading Global Energy Oil Company has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Engineering to join a digital venture backed by a FTSE 100 company that is currently in a scale-up mode, leveraging a global B2B customer base and network of the business. This is a dynamic and multicultural team with a blend of startup and enterprise experience, supported by a wider team of industry experts with functional knowledge and domain expertise. Current Tech Stack: Golang - Backend Python - Data Science and ETL tasks, alongside Terraform scripts for orchestration Frontend - React and Typescript All code goes through a CI/CD pipeline About you: You are the go to member of the Engineering team for leading technical expertise, presiding over frontend and backend development teams. Engineering Leadership: • An experienced Technical Lead with a track record of building delightful products for external customers in an Agile environment from inception to market and beyond • You aim for excellence with a pragmatic approach and fully appreciate the importance of maintaining a high level of quality and reliability on an application being used by customers daily to make decisions that impact their business • Responsible for the planning and execution of all software initiatives within the team • Manage day-to-day activities of the Engineering team, comfortable being hands-on and maintain sight of the strategic objectives of the business • Review other engineer’s code and ensure that standards are maintained • Deliver against business objectives in a timely fashion, making the right trade-offs between quality and speed • Hire the best talent available and promote a culture of collaboration and technical excellence within the Engineering team and beyond • Provide mentorship to the team, advising on sensible approaches and bringing clarity when there is uncertainty on how to handle a specific issue • Adopt best practices from Agile rituals to engineering excellence • Put in place the most appropriate security practices in the software used by all team members, as well as the code that is written by developers. Work also with members of risk and IT teams within the wider organisation • Facilitate healthy discussions on technical matters but not afraid of taking decisive action • Communicate and prioritise areas of technical debt and risks to delivery while suggesting corrective action • Prioritise your team’s work, ensuring expertise of each member is applied appropriately Technical proficiency: • Proficient in various backend language, especially Go. Comfortable with reading and writing frontend code (HTML, CSS, Javascript - React) [While you may not be a Fullstack Engineer, your grasp of the entire web platform enables you to lead engineers of all disciplines] • Experience leading data science and data engineering teams • Experienced building software on the Cloud (Google Cloud Platform in particular) • Very familiar with other traditional software engineering concepts such as databases and higher-level concepts such as the software development life cycle • Keep abreast of new technical developments outside work and can suggest novel approaches to the team if it makes sense This needs combining with a positive attitude and an ability to work within a large, globally dispersed project team in a multi-cultural environment. You also need to be a self-starter, a logical thinker and a quick learner, with strong initiative and excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, able to write clearly and concisely.
