Summary HMRC is one of the largest organisations in the UK and we run the biggest digital operation in Government. Our digital business runs the IT behind tax and benefits services for 45 million individual and 4.9 million business customers. We’re making HMRC’s services and information simpler, clearer and faster for individuals and businesses. To do that, we need Design Leads who will help our teams design intuitive and user-focused, successful services. Job description As a Design Lead, reporting to the Digital Head of Design, you will maintain an overview of the work taking place across a number of scrum teams, working primarily with content designers, interaction designers and service designers. You will also work with user researchers, product managers and business analysts to help define what will be built, and with developers help to figure out how it can be built. You will collaborate with our design leadership team to help coordinate and integrate design across our delivery centres and programmes of services. You will also be involved in an inclusive and vibrant community within HMRC and across government. Responsibilities You will be responsible for building design culture and expertise, playing a key role in embedding digital design skills and service standards through: Leading the team to deliver high-quality digital services, based on user needs and meeting HMRC and GDS design standards Helping team members identify ways to improve services and user journeys, for example: simplifying complex experiences and improving content within interactive services Leading quality assurance, including peer review/critiques and accessible design reviews Helping the team to work in an agile environment with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads and goals Contributing to effective demand and resource planning in collaboration with operations and scrum team management Line-managing civil service team members, in line with HMRC policies Working as part of the design leadership team to lead and enable strategic and organisational change Essential Skills & Expertise Extensive experience of designing interactive digital services, as an interaction, content or service designer Proven ability to design and create digital content and/or services that are accessible, usable, and based on user needs Verified experience in prototyping and iterating services and/or content Proven leadership skills: experience in design leadership, coaching and mentoring Established ability to help teams understand the wider service context of a project or product A sound knowledge of working within an agile environment Experience engaging with, and influencing, stakeholders to deliver outcomes Experience introducing positive change into working practices, teams or organisations A high understanding of working in multi-disciplinary teams and collaborative environments while maintaining effective performance in complex and challenging circumstances Desirable Skills, Experience & Expertise Designing integrated services, across multiple products and channels Developing design or content strategy, knowledge management, or other content-related expertise Working with the Service Manual and/or GOV.UK standards and working practices A familiarity with the GOV.UK design system and prototyping kit Technical skills You will be assed against these technical skills during the selection process: We’ll ask you to complete a short design-related exercise for the interview.
