Head of Education The Salters’ Company Location: London (Moorgate Station) however UK travel will be necessary on occasions Full-time, Permanent Salary: Competitive salary plus generous benefits package   The Opportunity The Worshipful Company of Salters is currently seeking to appoint a Head of Education to lead and manage its charity, the Institute for Industrial Chemistry, as well as overseeing and advising on other Company educational activities. The Head of Education, reporting to the Clerk (CEO), has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Institute and advising on other Education programmes and initiatives. Institute Overview The Institute is governed by the Institute Board to which the Head of Education acts as Secretary. The Salters’ Institute in conjunction with the University of York is one of the UK leaders in the field of science curriculum development, with an influence that stretches across the world. Its aims are clear – to promote the appreciation of chemistry and the related sciences amongst the young and to encourage chemistry-based careers. The Salters’ Institute delivers numerous initiatives including Festivals of Chemistry, Awards Programme, Alumni Network and Curriculum Development.   The role The role of Head of Education is to lead and manage the Salters’ Institute for Industrial Chemistry, formulating, reviewing and developing strategic and operating matters of the Institute, through the Institute’s staff. The role implements the decisions of the Institute Board and Court (Company Board). Reporting to the Clerk (CEO), the role involves: Responsibility for the leadership of the Institute staff (currently four), their formal appraisals and personal development. Working with the Institute Board and Clerk to develop the strategic direction of the Institute and acting as the Secretary of the Institute Board. Working with Institute Board members in the development of key Institute activity, notably Curriculum Development, the Alumni and Technician networks and Chemistry Festivals. Working with the Company’s Assistant Clerk to develop the annual budget and promote and sustain a financially viable Institute. Working with the Company’s Charities Officer to identify suitable scholarships and bursaries in line with the Company’s objective to promote and support science education. Working with the Company’s Public Programmes Manager to develop outreach programmes and events. Working with the University of York and other partners to deliver the Institute’s objectives. Developing the Institute’s strategic partnerships, especially with industry, in order to support the Institute’s objectives and attract sustainable income. Being the Institute’s ambassador, identifying opportunities to promote its work, especially focusing on its impact on young people. Leading the development of an alumni network to support the objectives of the Institute. The Candidate Key to success will be a commitment to the aims, ethos and traditions of the Company and Institute, coupled with the ability to take a ‘hands-on’ approach to day-to-day management, balanced by diplomacy and common sense. The ideal candidate will have proven management experience gained in a public or private sector organisation. The successful candidate will manifest: Stature, credibility, integrity and emotional intelligence with an approachable manner. Strategic thinking and performance as a team player who is able to take day-to-day decisions while accepting direction from the Clerk and Board. Proven knowledge of the education sector (primary, secondary and tertiary). Experience with partnership management across different sectors such as education and industry. First class communicating (written and oral) and social skills, with a strong intellect and sound judgement; the ability to listen and foster consensus. The ability to manage sensitively, and to delegate to a small team of permanent staff as well as to manage external partners and members of the Company who offer voluntary assistance. The ability to monitor budgets approved by the Board in conjunction with the Company’s Assistant Clerk (Head of Finance) Good networking and diplomatic skills, with a willingness sometimes to work outside of normal business hours and to attend a variety of Company and Institute functions, some of which may occur during evenings and weekends.   The Benefits Salary of c.£50,000 per annum 25 days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays Pension – matched with employer contribution (10%) Private Medical insurance Critical illness cover Life insurance cover Interest free season ticket loan   Closing Date:   Midnight on Monday 6 April 2020 Interviews: 23 – 24 April 2020
