Overview

All over the world women and girls have less social, economic and political power, which can lead to their human rights being denied. Gender inequality is the root cause of women’s rights abuses. ActionAid supports women and girls to claim their rights.   ActionAid is an international charity that works with women and girls living in poverty. Our dedicated local staff are changing the world with women and girls. We are ending violence and fighting poverty so that all women, everywhere, can create the future they want. ActionAid UK is part of the ActionAid International Federation of development charities. With an annual income of nearly £200m globally, this Federation works in 43 countries, reaching thousands of communities and, most importantly, making a real difference to the lives of the world’s poorest women and girls. The board of ActionAid UK are now seeking to recruit a new Chair to support the continued ambition of the charity in changing the lives of more women and girls. The Chair will engage a motivated and collaborative board, increasingly recognised for its pioneering work on diversity and inclusion. They will bring experience of charity governance and be credible in their relationships with external stakeholders and the wider ActionAid International Federation. The Chair will have a deep-rooted passion for ending poverty and injustice for women and girls around the world and a commitment to ActionAid UK’s values. The time commitment required of the Chair of the board is a minimum of 4 weeks per year, with the possibility of increasing to 6 weeks. This includes at least one weeklong international travel per year. The role of Chair is a voluntary role, but ActionAid will pay expenses for travel and accommodation for any ActionAid related trips. ActionAid is committed to supporting flexible working. If you would like to discuss options, including the possibility of a job share for this role, there will be space to do so during the interview process. Application process: Please apply by midnight on the 30th of March 2020. First round interviews will be held on the 16th of April 2020.
