Job Description

The Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Section of the Council has an interesting and challenging workload in reducing flood risk across the district and we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic person to join our team. Wakefield District covers an area of 337km2, there are about 120 watercourses across the district with a combined length of over 300km. Residential and business development within the district continues to rise. We are looking to recruit an ambitious person who is interested in furthering their career in Flood Risk Management. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in the field and be able to manage and motivate a small team of engineers and technicians to achieve the Council's Local Flood Risk Management Strategy objectives. To work as part of the Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Team to reduce the risk of flooding in Wakefield District and to ensure that the Council fulfils its duties under the National Planning Policy Framework, the Land Drainage Act and the Floods and Water Management Act. The main duties of this post will be to take a lead role in providing advice to the Local Planning Authority on flood risk and surface water drainage design matters to reduce the risk of flooding from new developments. The main responsibilities of the post will be to be the lead officer for the promotion of Sustainable Drainage Systems across the district, to manage the technical advice provided to the planning authority by the Lead Local Flood Authority in its role as a statutory consultee, manage and monitor the performance of responses to planning, to provide technical advice to planning on complex/major applications, attend when required the planning committee, to work with the team leader to provide/update planning guidance and policies on drainage & flood risk, provide technical input and and advice into the review and development of strategic plans, overall management of watercourse consenting and overall management of the maintenance of Council adopted SuDS systems and flood alleviation assets. In house training within the Team will be given and additional external training will be available if required. You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team who work closely together to provide the support and guidance necessary to achieve its objectives. The role will involve discussions with developers, Councillors and officers from other council sections so good communications skills are essential. Attendance at Planning Committee is sometimes required. The work involves being both outside and in the office, as part of a team but often unaccompanied. As the work may involve visiting a number of sites around the district a full driving license is essential. A casual car allowance scheme is in operation and pool cars are available.
